Help, Need crash course in 1967 4P car
« on: June 07, 2015, 06:36:52 AM »
I'm going to look at a 4P car in the morning.  It does not have it's original motor and no known documents.  I have had a self taught crash course on CRG, like just now!  The speedometer cable location is about all I've found so far for signs of L48.

How is the best way to tell if it is an original L48 car and not an L30?

It does have:  4P on tag, 12 bolt with traction bar brkt., Muncie, tach (Don't know what redline yet).

It does NOT have:  Rally Sport, frt. disc brakes.

It is supposedly Nantucket blue with blue interior.  Don't know if it's NOR or LOS yet.

Please give me all the pointers you can.

Thanks,
Bryan

The great thing about 67's is that everything is listed on the trim tag. Get the production date and all the info on the tag. I don't have my pics of my 67 with me, but will be home in a few days. Good luck Bryan! Sounds like a cool car.

Well we made a day of it.  I went with my good friend to decipher this 4P car, and I'm pretty sure he will buy it.  When we left, we were pretty confident it was an SS L48 car.  The build date matches up with the vin chart on CRG, but I need to verify the body numbers are inline.  Here is the trim tag:

  05A                          B
  67 12437  NOR 115913
  717-Z              E - E
  2L
  4P

  VIN 124377N215610

Well, I was told the car was Nantucket but its Deepwater Blue.

The speedometer cable did come out the Muncie hole.

All 4spd. components looked as if they have never been molested, Z bar and Z bar hanger, clutch pedals, etc.

Dual exhaust with the hangers intact, threaded bolts in frame rails on LH tail pipe hanger was in tact.  Has 3/8 fuel line.

SS hood and SS 350 gas cap, SS 350 grill emblem were there.  I just saw on CRG that SS350 emblems were early.  Is 05A too late for SS350??

The tire sticker in Glove box was 7.35 x 14 4 ply with AG code.  The car did not have power brakes, but rally's have been put on I suppose.  (Would it have had PO1 wheel covers with WS tires?  According to the chart on CRG.)  Is WS white stripe?

The car will need quarters, core support, and RH inner fender, and a lot of elbow grease!

Please let me know if the body numbers line up?  The tag looks good, rivets look good.

Thanks,
Bryan

Tough to tell what it was without the original engine and the info provided.  All L48's and L30s had the M20 muncie transmission, the VIn number and the Body number are correct for the Early May Timeframe.  The ss350 emblems went away when the big blocks were introduced (mid March 67) and became just the SS emblems.  There may have been a supply of them left over that continued to be used on the small block cars until they were used up, (I'm not up on the exact timeframe that the change actually occured).  The only thing i see that could indicate its an L30 over an L48 is the 7.35 by 14" tire sticker.  SS's came stock with D70x14 tires, BUT they could have optional 7.35X14 whitewall tires (WS White stripe) installed as an option.  But this car basically has no options other than the floor shifter, so I couldn't see someone ordering optional tires on an otherwise bare bones car.  Not proof one way or another by a long shot.  Did the hood have insulation under it (or signs it was ever there- reproductions don't count)?  Did you get the rear axle code, or know what ratio the axle is?  Was the radius rod (traction bar) there, was it round or square?

Thanks Mark,

The hood had 67 grills in it and definitely original and had been on the car for a looong time, as were the SS350 grill.  I did not remember if the insulation clips had been there, but no insulation.  Did 67's have the date stamp in the LH rear corner as 69's did?  If so there should be a 16, 17, 18 there??  And I forgot to look.  The blue seat belts did have 17A67 on them all.  The traction bar brkt. on the tube did have two holes, one low and one higher and to the left a little.  the floorboard brkt was there also with about six inches of the original rectangle traction bar still in it, where some dumb ass cut it off!  I scraped till I was purple for the code, but I couldn't access well because of close quarters.  I did see the 860 casting # and the casting date of C- 18?- 7.  The only thing that I saw that was somewhat fishy was the nicest 67 console and gauges you could ask for, and I took the shift plate up and the boot and retaining ring looked factory, but console was not on the tag.  The owner said the previous owner told him the tach was 5500, doesn't that say L48?  The tach has been nabbed!, by the owner before!

First off, I'm not heavy into 67's, so take my info with a grain of salt.  Theres no code for a floor console (2G) on the trim tag, so there should not be a tach in the car, just a speedometer and gas gauge so that has been added to the car, can't use it as evidence for it being an SS or anything else.  SS's had the hood insulation as part of the the SS option, L30's could only get hood insulation as part of the Z87 option, (which this car does not have)  So if the hood was a repro it probably doesn't have the insulation (or the correct platic pins holding it on), if it was from a 67 SS (either this one or some other one) it should have it.  I don't see jumping out at me that points one way or the other at this point other than the tire sticker.

In 67 disc brakes required rally wheels, they weren't available as a separate option in 67.

I am not professing to be an expert but didn't the L30 come with the M20 Saginaw? Isn't this why the Muncie speedo cable right of the steering column is an SS identifier?

Hey Buddy,

I guess 05A's are like a magnet, they just keep popping up.  I was just helping a very good friend out, that wants to buy it, I'm pretty sure he's going to.  He has a "657" replacement block that will fit like a glove, or close.

Buddy, Was your 67 a NOR or LOS?  I just thought of something we need to know.  Did NOR L48 M20 cars have smog?  If so, wouldn't that have been an MT block?

Thanks,
Bryan
