Transmission/clutch noise

Guys:

I am getting a minor squeal when I let the clutch out in neutral.  As soon as the clutch starts to engage the squeal starts.  One knowledgeable guy said it was transmission, possibly a bearing.  Does this sound right?  Would fairly suck if that's the case.  BTW L78, M22.  Pretty new clutch in good shape.

I'd guess it's the throwout bearing, not the transmission. Man, have I been there!

I've never had that happen, but I would think TO bearing or an alignment issue.

Well that's what I was thinking too but being a newbie I wanted to get some more experienced opinions.  I will try to check it out this weekend if it doesn't snow

Based on your symptom, I'd vote for the input shaft bearing. With the clutch pedal on the floor (clutch disengaged), the input shaft isn't turning - the only relative motion is between the input shaft and the pilot bushing, and the throwout bearing is rotating. When the clutch pedal comes up and the clutch starts to engage, the input shaft spins up, and when the pedal is all the way up, motion stops between the pilot bushing and the input shaft, and the throwout bearing is off the clutch fingers and stops rotating.

I will be looking at the clutch/transmission this weekend, weather permitting.  Some more info is that the car is wanting to creep forward in neutral when I let the clutch out.  Does this help with the diagnosis?

I had the same symptoms about 5 years ago, especially the fwd creep.   Mine is a L48, M21.    John Z. is right.   I  had the input shaft bearing replaced and the problem was fixed.
