CE coded warranty engines
« on: May 13, 2014, 01:23:28 AM »
A few questions that have been on my mind about warranty engines: 1) If a number, like CE0707, (just a random example) were deciphered, would that be the 707th warranty engine total for year 70  to include all warranty engines or specifically just that particular type, like the 707th L78 or DZ depending on which block it is stamped on? 2) A 70 engine could be in a 69 car, right, it was still under warranty? 3) would that CE be a short block only or long block or did CE include both?

Answers

1.  All warranty engines from that engine plant, not a specific engine.
2.  Yes.  In 1969 I believe the warranty was 5 years or 50,000 miles.
3.  Quote from link below "This numbering system applies to service engine assemblies, partial engines, fitted cylinder cases, cylinder cases".

See this link.

Thanks, I should have re-read that before I posted. I guess I knew, but the old cranium is not hitting on all 8 these days, I guess.

If I recall correctly, the reason for the CE numbered engines was to ensure that there was a *unique* identifier on the engine, to meet one or more state's requirements, thus the number is unique within all chevrolet engines.   Again, if I recall correctly, Tonawonda was assigned a particular sequence of numbers, and Flint a particular sequence of numbers, so that you could not have two different engines with the same identifier code.

Man they must have went through a lot of them. My 69 big block is CE974163 dated June 11 1969. I guess that would say over 24,000 CE,s by June.

Remember, the sequence started with production at the beginning of the model year, not the calendar year.  So by June, you are getting close to the end of the model year.  And that was for all CE engines from that plant.

Hey guys,   Is there any available information to track a CE block by its production number? I have came across one that has my interest peaked due to its casting # and date code that could fall in line with use in my 67 SS 350.

There is no way to trace it.  If you want to put it in, you can.

Correct. No way to track it.  If it was installed in another car under warranty, the dealership that did the work MAY have noted the assembly stamp information on the block in the paperwork.  But no guarantee of that and no way to figure out what dealer it could have been.

And even if you knew the dealership and the date they did it, they still wouldn't have the records for that far back, and even if they did.. they wouldn't look for them for you....   :)

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm still going to look into it a little more because it is a 2657 block(long shot 302)
