Vin check
« on: January 12, 2015, 07:32:07 AM »
Hello everyone, I trust you all have had a very relaxing festive season.

I have a quick question or two about a '68 Camaro I am looking at here in NZ.
The VIN is 124378N394854
Now I have to admit it is "tacked on" to a drag car here that i am considering purchasing, and I am pretty sure that apart from the body not much else is original so I'm not even going to bother with a picture of the VIN tag and the Fisher Body Tag is gone.
That said however there are no side marker lights and it has a 67 grille but it does have '68 front doors.
I was unable to get to the partial VIN #s as I had no tools when I looked at it.

So my questions are:
Is there a record of the VIN in the database?
Do '68 doors fit a '67 body?
If the quarter panesl were replaced at some stage do the '68 ones come with the side marker holes stamped out or do you have to cut them out?

My intention is to partially restore it to a Pro Street car but I am curious if there was a record of what this VIN originally was.
I am also a bit unsure whether iit a '68 or '67.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers
Wayne

Yikes, sounds a little scary title-wise.

No on the db.

If the firewall is intact the windshield wiper motor or the hole for it, should be perfectly round then 67.  Oval is 68.  Have seen plenty of 68 marker lights removed and filled in to look like a 67    Is it possible to remove vent window from a 67 door and replace with 68-69 glass?    Best of luck Kiwi

Hi there, thanks for the replies,
The hole for the wiper motor is oval, thanks for that iinfo.
One more tick in the '68 box.
I'm not sure about the doors though.
Somewhere in the dusty dark corners of my brain i vaguely recall a conversation about doors and something about the latch heights being different so you can t just swap them over.
Im not sure about removing the quarter window though and replaceing the glass.
Anyone else have an idea?

Cheers

The hinges are different and won't interchange.

Hi Kurt thanks for the information.

I have seen a pink sheet, a bill of sale, a bill of laideing and a customes clearance sheet here in NZ.
Those are all the pieces of paper I need here to go for LTSA compliance and local VINing to be legal on the road here once I make it compliant.

One can only guess that the tag that is rivetted on to the drag race dashboard matched the car until I pull it apart a bit more.

At least now I am sure it is a '68

How much for that bridge you mentioned in the other post?

Thanks, Wayne
