69 gas cap
« on: October 03, 2006, 05:56:14 PM »
Dose anyone know if the original gas cap for the 69 is the same as the GM replacement gas cap ? The AIM shows the gas cap as # 3843698 and the replacement gas cap number is a # 3931449.

Both caps have a large S in the middle.
The original cap has a "sm" logo on one ear - the replacement just has a 'S" on the ear.

That was the only difference I saw. The replacemnt cap is still available from GM.

I recall that the wording on the caps is different.

The GM replacement, made by Stant, has the large "S" stamped on the rivet, and says "Vented" across the top and "Anti Surge" across the bottom; also has a thicker and more effective gasket.

There was one on Ebay Item# 14003493469 that claimed to be a original 69 gas cap. This one is completely round with out the ears on it, the VENTED lettering is raised instead of been stamped. Would this be the assembly line gas cap ?

Dont forget that the new repo caps come with the "Made in Mexico" sticker

You guys are right....
Went back and compared.
The replacement caps are not even close to the originals.

The original is round with raised letters, and an sm on the grip.
The replacement has ears, Stamped letters, with only a S on the grip.

The big "S" is the only similar trait.

 The replacement does look like it would work better.
Been a while since I looked.  ::)

The caps look the same to me except the orig has a circle around the sm  on the grip. The replacements just has the s. I also notice the grip is 180 deg out compared to orig.
