69 Z Clutch Safety switch
« on: July 13, 2014, 08:04:03 PM »
Is there anyway to repair or restore this switch? Mine is failing intermittently.

Thanks

Lawrence

Have you removed it and checked it?  Cleaned and tested it on the bench?

Post a picture. I have some ideas, but own Automatics so it would help.

My problem ended up being a frayed solenoid wire grounding out on the bolt that holds the "J" clip to the fire wall. So the switch was good.

Here's an FYI...That is a really simple switch. If your careful you can pry the tabs up and take it apart and clean it. Go slow when you take it apart though, it's been a few years since I did one and IIRC there is a spring in there. Clean it lube it and it should be good. I did one off a GTO Judge that I had in the late 80's.

A word of caution: The Plastic body of the switch can be very, very fragile. (If it has a melamine or plastic body?)
Careful is correct, NO pressure can be applied to the case- Crack!

Picture anyone??

Thanks, John.

It does look like the stamped housing has heavy tabs on the side opposite the leads connection points. They look pretty heavy and it would take some care to pry them 90 degrees vertical to allow the plastic body to lift out,,the lever on the back side most likely drives a wiper contact with raised nubs that could be polished (Burnished) with a rubberized abrasive like Craytex. the stationary's are probably riveted to the switch leads. A little lithium lube and re-crimp and good to go. I am not a 4sp guy, do the vendors repop this thing, as that might make it not worth the effort, unless it looks like a submarine hatch switch in comparison ha ha ha

They are re-popped and not too bad except the wire color is not exactly correct.
