Rear axle ID
« on: May 16, 2014, 01:07:09 AM »
Found the rear axle ID on my 68 .Perhaps someone here can tell me what it means. When I got car in 77 it had 4.88 posi in it.I changed the gears to 4.11 a couple years later. It was very likely changed from stock as the ring gear has a spacer between the carrier and ring.I think its a series 3 carrier?
The ID is  PP  0321G1 stamped into the forward side of right tube.On the corner of center section is cast K67.

Thanks for the link Mike.Looks like my axle originally had 3.07 12 bolt with one wheel peel.Made on Mar 21 by Detroit Gear -1 st shift if I understand the chart correctly.

Scroll up a little from Mike's link to decode the casting date.
The CRG explanation is easier to read than Colvin's.

It's really not that hard. It just takes practice and a great source like CRG!

Thanks yet again!
I now know how/when built, but I wont be going back there.I may regear to 3.73 and the posi stays.Perhaps the posi was dealer installed?

With that axle, I'd say it was originally an L35 with an auto.

I also suspect a lower HP 396 and Auto was original. Was doing some research of the console and floor area (thanks to this site)and thats why I am guessing an auto was in there. It has a rubber cable boot in the floor under the console. The speedo cable exits the firewall on the left side of steering coluum. The cutout for the 4 spd shifter is rough and jagged,so not factory and I have a SBC cross member for trans.
