On Pontiac Build sheets they add the numbers as well, if BOX (X) is used for options 1, 2, 4 a 3 would indicate 1 & 2, a 5 would indicate 1 & 4.
 Notice there is no 3 as that would give 2 ways to add to 5 and no way to discern which was which.

Ok, well it's good to know that there is consistency within GM which supports this!  Thank you for that!   
Turns out the dome light was an aftermarket that my uncle put on the car in the early 70's.   (he remembered it after I shot him a pic of it, and retracted his original born with statement)   But it did look pretty cool!  Of course I went back to original :)
