So now what makes a small block different than a big block these days? I thought it used to be dictated by CID size (with the 400 CID small block aside).

What differentiates the two is bore center spacing - the LS engines are 4.4", which has been small-block bore spacing since 1955; big-block bore center spacing is 4.84".

What JohnZ said... ...  and of course, that larger bore spacing for the old big blocks, also made for a *larger physical size* of the engines, which precipitated the terminology of 'BIG block'... 

Related question:  Was the 'old' 348/409' (1958-1964) series engines also on a 4.84" bore spacing?   If not, does anyone know what it was?

 I just checked out the specs for the new LS7 (427) and older 400 CID motor. I see the new LS7 is stroked compared to the older 400.  Between the two blocks If the bores (4.125") are the same as well as the centerlines to call it a small block does the LS7 have Siamese cylinders?

Although I've never worked with an LS engine, I believe ALL the LS engines, from LS1 thru LS? are siamesed, but since these engine blocks are aluminum, I'm suspecting that due to the better heat transfer characteristics of Al vs Fe, that the siamesed cylinders are not a thermal problem as they could be with the old 400 block?

Those LS7 motors are incredible and pull from start to finish. And with the brakes, suspension and light weight I'd love to have one.

Okay, so which is the faster car?  According to what I have read...the Z28 is has a biggern engine, is faster and is more expensive than the ZL1...The world no longer makes sense.

I suppose the Z28 is a stripped down purely track car, whereas the ZL1 is an all out fast street/strip/touring car?  Am I wrong.

And for the record, please tell me the renderings for the 2016 prototype Camaro is not true....ewwwwww.

I just watched a video from Jay lenos garage, int he video the GM rep says they are going to limit production to 1500 units per year. But when asked about price he just says north of the ZL-1. So if a ZL-1 base price is around 56k, the Z/28 may be around 60 to 62k? I am still hunting for a definitive price on this machine.
