1969 muncie speedo capplug
« on: February 16, 2013, 03:52:00 AM »
Here is another head scratcher. Taking apart my 1969 to have a major resto of body with paint. It is a 12B(1968)build car. I have owned this car for over 33 years and as far as I know there is no evidence it has ever been apart. I have it pretty stripped down with everything removed from cowl, dash and interior.Just a bare shell now. I noticed upon removal of the speedo cap plug that it has a chrysler product insignia embossed in the interior side.can't post pic,but it is clearly a Chrysler part with CDPD(Chrysler,Dodge DEsoto,Plymouth) insignia. I am searching if other 12B owners would chime in if they have the same or anyone for that matter. Could there have been a shortage and this was provided from the vendor? I have no reason to bekieve this was replaced and the car is original in most all respects. it is a real muncie car with born with trans. Look forward if this can be confirmed in other cars. thanks.

I have a 10A '68 built '69 and still have the original black speedo caplug.  I replaced it during the restoration but kept it just for historical value.  It is in a bin out in the garage and I have not seen it in a few years but I can tell you it does not have a Chrysler emblem on it.  I have also owned my car for 33 years. :)

If I can find it, I wll check it again.

Caplugs were a commodity item - not unusual to get some CDPD-marked plugs mixed in a shipment to GM; those things came by the thousands in a box, and nobody paid any attention to what was molded on them - if they fit the hole, that's all that mattered.

I am so thankful for JOHNZ :) and the wisdom, insight and personal experience he freely offers to this site. It really helps those of us who want to understand the processes of production of these great cars we all love. I would still like to have others respond as to whether they have similar parts as the information helps paint a picture of what was used and when. I particuarly like threads that gather members information. This info has helped me in my restoration with things like how D90 stripes where applied at different times during build dates and what fuel block was used on L78 at different points,etc...I am one who strives for truth and accuracy in my restoration and preservation and continue to support the vast array of knowledge this site provides. Maybe this should be moved to research topics? Thanks,Bentley.

I came across this and wanted to follow up. The caplug I have saved in the garage appears to be smaller (3/4") than the one you have (1") . It also has no markings on the other side.

The AIM calls for a 1" hole to be made if you order the M20 option. Does anyone know if the "standard production" speedo hole is 1" or 3/4"? This caplug might be from a different part of the car?  It might be from the rear fender well but that is the only other place I could remember finding one.
