I've moved on. It wasn't the car for me. I'm still searching.

OK, so I went to see the car.  Disappointing to say the least.  Here are a few pics. His brother showed the car and had no answers.

1.  There was no VIN tag on the dash.  Just not there.  Brother did not have any details.
2.  The engine codes were sanded off.  Claimed when the engine was rebuilt mechanic did it but it was the original block.'
3.  Car was cosmetically in worse shape then I expected.
4. Motor was cosmetically in worse shape also.

On the bright side I do believe it was a real SS/RS.  Muncie cable was right and verything else checks out although there were only 26 hood springs,

Re: Proper location for washer bottle on 67 RS

That's a 68 and 69 thing only. 68 RS - Drivers side fenderwell. 69 RS - Passengers side fenderwell. 67 - Core support. You must have been looking at the 68 AIM.

I found this on another site.  Says 68 RS is mounted on the fenderwall .    Could this be more proof it is an RS?

Thanks all for the help here.

Of I look at the picture of the motor and enlarge it a bit , by the windshield washer resevoir there are two holes in the metal.  Could that be where the headlight vacume was mounted?  Would there be a switch in the car somewhere that I can check.

I will be down to see the car tomorrow.

Also, when I look at the picture fro the side, the wheel wells have a chrome strip.  Isn't that RS accenting?

Thanks Guys,

So the car is now Fathom Blue with a white convertible top.  With the negative sign, how do I tell what color it was originally?

Mike,  Sounds like you are close.  How about a little road trip?  I'm a newbie and sure could use an experiences set of eyes to inspect.  I'd be willing to pay the going rate also.

I live in Putnam County, about 45 minutes from White Plains.  This car is in Long Island.

And this car is a lot more $$$$$ than the other car.

Interesting.  Looking at the motor, it was pointed out on the last car I was looking at that the alternator was on the wrong side for an original.  This one is the same.  I know the engine on this was rebuilt also.  I will get some pics when I look at the car of the block stamp to make sure it is the original block.  Not sure why it seems common to rebuilt differently from stock.

OK guys.  I've given up on that car as the owner just doesn't want to show it.  I think he knows I'm on to him.  I have a different car I'm interested in.  Attached is a pic of the cowl tag.  What can folks tell me about this car?

The pic is too big to post.  I have to figure out how to compress but here is info from the cowl tag:

             04D
ST       68-12467     NOR121835     BODY
TR       712                      -2          PAINT

What does the dash mean on the body paint section?

Thanks
John

So you can see he either doesn't have a clue as to what he's got or is trying to pass it off as a legit matching numbers SS.  I've spoken to him now enough to realize he's a bit of a goof ball but my real question is with all these obvious issues if the car is a real ss with matchinh block and transmission is it worth high $20's.  I've been looking now for a while and these cars are just not available.

Thanks guys for the tips .  More pics attached.

Sorry guys but I haven't been able to get over to see the car yet with the holidays and cold weather here in NY, the owner doesn't want to show it.  He still want to sell it though.

I have been talking to him and here's what I know:

He claims the block and tranny are original and it's an SS.  It's a 10 bolt that he claims the previous owner swapped out the original 10 bolt posi ( I know the SS should be 12 bolt but he could be mistaken about it.

He says the interior has been replaced and the car was repainted white with rally stripes.  None of that scares me if it is a true SS with original block and tranny.  He has the original hood and rally wheels.

The one thing he has recently mentioned is that there is some rust at the base of the windshield.  I realize that could be a disaster but would you guys consider that a showstopper?

Thanks guys. I'm supposed to get over there and see the car this week. The owner has been saying enough shaky things to make me skeptical but I'll try to get some pics and post.

Thanks Paul. So when I go look at this car and see the engine stamped with MS code and the speedometer cable coming out of the right side of the column what should I think?  Seller says he replaced10 bolt posi with a new 10 bolt. What would be the definitive factor here. I realize there's no sure thing but somehow I have to decide which things to believe.

Thanks again
J
