General Discussion / Original DZ 302 Camshaft Change.
« on: April 24, 2017, 03:18:56 PM »
Has anyone swapped out the Offroad solid flat tappet cam for a Comp Cams Hydraulic Roller?

Just thinking it would be one less maintenance deal to think about, and I could save the Original cam and lifters in case I ever sold the car and someone wanted it.
Thanks

General Discussion / Re: Coker Tire Bias Look Radials.

I apologize,
I had Goodyear stuck in my head when typing since that is what I took off. They are in Fact Firestone Wide O Ovals.
The point is that they make the car drive like a modern car again.
The Bias Tires even on a fully restored suspension drive horribly compared to the radials.
If you want a car to drive instead of a Trailer Queen consider them.

General Discussion / Coker Tire Bias Look Radials.

I just received my replacement tires for my '69 Z/28
It had a Brand new set of Goodyear F-70-15 bias ply tires but honestly, I live out in the country and they drive like crap.
They track every crack and uneven piece of pavement. Plus they grossly understeer.

Had my Bias Look Goodyear Wide "O" Oval Radials on Order from Coker Tire in FR70-15 for at least 4 months.
They called me last week and said they were in, and I received them today.
Ran straight in and had them mounted up.

These tires look great, and let me tell you this, they are quieter, less harsh, perfectly round even up to (Ahem) 90 mph
And they drive FLAWLESSLY!
I got so used to over-steering the car to get through a twisty corner that I tend to keep cutting in too far now.
Anyhow, If you are considering them I would encourage it. They look right, drive right, and make the car so much nicer.

Happy guy now,
John James

So I think this will work. I created a Photobucket account and here is a link to a pic of my Trim Tag.

Creating my Photobucket account now.
So the 6308's sound right and I will likely order them from Summit. I am a Licensed Drag Racer so i get a pretty good discount through them.
Will there be a paper tag or some markings so I know I get the right springs when I open the box?

Oh.  Well I guess I'm not gaining anything at .030.  ;D

I remember using the steel shim gaskets back in the day.  I used to paint them with aluminum paint on both sides before assembly.

I think I like the multi-layer type gaskets better for long term seal.  Any opinions on that?

I build and run Race cars. My current Big block Chevy in my 67 Nova Carbon Fiber/ Fiberglass composite  bodied Tube Chassis drag car is an all Dart 582 inch engine with a net compression of 15.25-1, I run on Methanol with 5% nitro-Parafins in it called M-5 from VP.
I EXCLUSIVELY use Multi Layer Steel Gaskets from Cometic and they never fail, they crush consistently and can easily handle the cylinder pressures of my high compression engine.
I will never use anything other than MLS unless trying to stay true to an all original scenario, even then, who's gonna' see your head gaskets.

Hey Group,
I bought a 1969 Z/28 through Barrett-Jackson Vegas last fall.
I am really happy with it. really all I have done is convert to a Heartbeat Power Steering which went well and I got a pre order in for the bias Look Radials from Coker and they sent an e-mail that they should be ready to ship in a month or so.
I was wanting to try and retrofit a couple of 390 DP Holleys so i could shelf the insanely rich Twin 780's and although I got it all to fit but those Nascar Spec 390 carbs are freaks, those suckers want to outflow 950's I have seen.
Fell back to the original Holleys on the winters. It actually runs pretty good just pig fat on the mixture is all.

So here I am looking to do a couple things on the interior.  The trim code is in fact 712 so it is a Deluxe interior car and has all the Deluxe interior panels and such but somehow, somewhere it ended up with standard seat covers.
I want it all to be correct, so where would I buy to get the most correct seat covers for a 1969 Deluxe interior.
It's Black so that should be pretty easy.

Another question is on exhaust, it has a pretty nice little set of headers in great shape but they aren't from 1969, the exhaust is brand newish and is a couple of Turbo style mufflers that are well done  and the exhaust exits correctly and nice tips.
I was just thinking for the limited amount i would drive this car that the Chambered exhaust might be fun although I know pretty loud.
Anybody do the Chambered exhaust and are you happy with it?

Annnnd finally Front Coil springs, I feel the car sits higher up in the front than I would like, but with the F-70-15 Tires the top of the tire is about an inch below the wheel opening.
It looks like the springs are not original so I think someone spec'd the wrong spring.
What is the shortest spring for a 302 4-speed  non-a/c car?
Thanks.
I will try to post pics of the Trim Tag again but I can't get the file small enough.

There are so many factors contributing to running Pump Gas or not.
As someone said obviously timing is a huge factor but often people forget about fuel mixture.
By that I mean your Fuel air Ratio.
On my 1969 Z/28 Original 302 Double Hump heads correct factory Cam and a Winters Crossram with those two ridiculously overfueled carbs for a Street Car, I haven't once heard any detonation even under low rpm heavy load.
I do however make sure I buy 93 Octane Ethanol Free fuel.
While Ethanol can reduce spark knock it plays hell on rubber hoses mot made for an Alcohol laden fuel.
Is 10-15% Ethanol enough to be a problem. I don't know, but I will tell you this. Alcohol of any type requires a much bigger jetting and if you run an engine lean it is much more prone to pre-ignition spark knock.

Looks like Macneish has "looked At" and or certified a lot of these cars.

Got the carbs and I have to modify the Throttle shaft arms to clear the Winters Manifold. Might pick up a couple of 1/2" inch spacers to see if that would work. Don't want to get to carried away as I want it to still look very stock/Crossram if you can call that setup "Stock".

@GreenNv, I don't think it will fall flat at the top end as 780 is a very conservative flow for these particular #390 Carbs times two. Remember they run these carbs on Nascar restrictor plate tracks and they only run one 390 and make 700 horsepower with them.

Besides this Car is a Cruise in car. not going to be spinning it to the 8 thousand rpms it is capable of.

I run drag cars that run high 7's to low 8's in the quarter mile.
I drive like a grandma on the street.
Don't need to pretend it's a 10 second street car like everybody at a Drive In thinks they have. (But they don't).

Gonna play with it some more next week, Football season and Family Holiday Dinners sure put a Kink in the Hotrod Shop

Thanks but that wouldn't work on a cross ram. the carbs are located at the right front of the cylinder head and the left rear.
That would cause chaos with the fuel distribution.
I ordered two brand new carbs from Summit just now.
With my racer discount they were over a hundred bucks each off of retail and on sale so what's a mere $1100 bucks right?...... LOL

General Discussion / Power steering from Heartbeat on 69 Camaro
« on: November 25, 2016, 10:25:33 PM »
On my recent 69 Z/28 I purchased a month ago from Barrett Jackson, I already put a full power steering kit on it from Heartbeat City.
Very nice and complete kit (except Belt but I knew that when ordered).
Easy enough install as I actually fabricate and build race cars anyhow so this was nothing.

Makes it nice to not have to saw on the steering wheel, although honestly it wasn't bad, but I know the wife will be happier with the power.

The car is a Winters Crossram setup with the dual Holley 585's and it is ridiculously rich.
I knew it would be, and it is actually pretty drive-able, but it loads the heck out of the plugs if run at slow speed or idles at all.

Heck my high 7 second 1/4 Mile Tube Chassis 67 Nova with a 582 making over 1000 n/a Horsepower only uses a 1450 cfm alky carb.

I was looking around as I knew NASCAR uses a "SPEC" Holley 390 cfm carb that is a 4150 double pumper design and has center hung bowls just like the Original Crossram Carbs.

They would look so close only an expert would MAYBE be able to tell with the Air Cleaner on the car.
$1100 bucks my cost for two carbs from Summit.
What I am wondering is have you ever heard of anyone running this setup?

I don't want to give up the crossram for a single manifold. Face it, if you've got it flaunt it!

There is no way to "Detune 1170 CFM to not be ridiculously rich with the original carbs. But for cruising around
780 total would be just a bout right.

Any thoughts??
Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving
John

Unfortunately no documentation of any kind.
I think it was part of settling an estate deal that may have gone on for a few years and that's why it finally ended up at B-J with no reserve.
I tried to post a pic of the trim tag ill try again now.
I see what you mean about the stripes coming down below the Spoiler.
And of course yeah, the Custom Door panels but standard seats.
I don't mind driving the crossram it actually drives pretty good although pretty sensitive and nothing that can be done to lean it down at idle, holy moses it is rich, but 1170 cfm of carburetion on a 302 is insane.
I did a little research and Holley actually makes 390 cfm carburetors in a Double pumper with the exact same body as these.
They are used in NASCAR RACING for the lower classes like the guys that race small 1/4-1/2 mile asphalt stuff. Maybe other classes too, I don't follow NASCAR.
But 780 cfm would be a whole lot easier to tune and it would retain the look of the crossram.
Face it, Single Holley or a Crossram with a pair of twins when you pop the hood????? No question on that one.
Anyhow, yeah it is fun already and the Power Steering is on FEDEX as we speak so I'll have that installed in a week or so.

@69 ZEE,
Thanks for the info, interesting to see.
I think the Family Patriarch died a few years ago and that kind of explains the other two sales it was held back on reserve.

Truthfully I wasn't even really looking at this car very hard as i did figure at B-J with Buyers commish it would go near 80ish so I do feel okay with the price.

Here is a link to the Barrett-Jackson docket for others to see.
