Originality / NOS? GM 3877660 '69 Z28 T. Housing....
« on: July 08, 2011, 12:47:34 AM »
40 years ago I bought my '69 Z28.  It had the wheels and Shift Knob changed (Day One), other than these two items is was as it left the factory.  I kept it as original a possible, and have replaced the US Mags and shift knob with correct items.  I entered it into several shows in"81 '82 (Car Craft, etc.), but as it is completely original (dull with patina under the hood)  it did not stand a chance with over "Restored" cars.  [Mendoza's White Z repainted Silver with a crossram, Chrome hinges, headers, etc. that was featured in Magazines]  An underhood photo from '82  appeared in April '82 Hot Rod and HR Annuals for it's Cowl Induction setup.   Last year Jerry MacNisch certified it as "unrestored very original" '69 Z28 with original engine, trans, rear, gm chambered exh, fan, intake, carb, water pump, smog hoses, dist, Alt, etc., etc.

Now the frustrating part.  I have purchased several items to replace/repair a few parts that have worn out, but most have been different and I ended up cleaning up and using the originals.

The Thermostate Housing has some corrosion on the neck and inside.  Several years ago I used JB Weld to patch the inside.  I have been trying to find an exact replacement.   The original has the Part Number on the rim.  All replacements (Including a "NOS") neck all have the Part Number on the top.

Where can I find an EXACT replacement?   Are they available
?

General Discussion / Re: Z28 Stripe
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:19:26 PM »

This is my car with the origional paint that was on it in 1971, before I had it "correctly" re-painted in 1982.
I had never seen and was not aware of the assembly manual instructions before I measured them.
Last year it was certified by MacNeish as a "very origional unmolested survivor class"  Z/28 with one repaint.

I had kept the origional factory paint flat hood when I installed a cowl hood.
MacNiesh spent more time looking at the hood than any other item !  He stated that the hood has an origional correct factory paint job.

Of the 4-5 Z/28's that seem to have the short rear stripes from the factory, all share the same information.

All are Z/28's
All seem to be Z/28's without a factory installed Spoiler.
All were made in LA.
All bodies were made in Late October 1968 10C or 10D (Possibly painted on the same day.)
All have stripes that match the assembly manual.
Of the three that I know the VIN numbers, they are within 500 VINs of each other.

My guess is that on one or a few days in late October 1968 someone painted the Non-Spoiler Z/28's incorrectly to match the Assembly manual instructions.

This would make only a very few were painted at the factory per the "incorrect" Assembly Manual.

Note: asm69's likely had its spoiler "dealer added" because if I remember correctly, the stripes continue to the rear lip,
and it is missing the relocated Camaro emblem.,
mine was added in '82 when I had it re-painted.

It was easier to re-paint mine to match what was know, then try to explane why my stripes did not match others in 1982.

This is another photo I took of the same car 43 years ago in the hot pits.
Similar photos are in the best book on these cars "Chaparral" by Richard Falconer

Here are a couple of the photos I took at Riverside in 1966 in Pit Lane.

I was working on Follmers T-70 and wanted to find out what Jim Hall was doing.  I stood behind Phil's car when he started it.  Push shifter forward and then back to find first, hit ign then starter with NO THROTTLE.  It started and idled at about 600 rpm, he never reved it (No Netural !) and motored out of the pits sounding like a motoboat.  I would sure like to see it again.  I took a bunch of photos for a model company as Cox Models had the official rights.

Restoration / Re: Brake line and fuel line clamps and bolt finish
« on: April 02, 2009, 04:40:47 AM »
I going through my Survivor '69 Z28.  All the current small parts I have purchased (Coil, PCV hose, etc.) do not exactly match the origionals.  I have only used a few items that were close enough [The battery tray nut was lost, and I had to used the tray assembly].

I have only two of the 4 origional fuel line hose clamps (two were broken).  The origionals have square ends and are slightly smaller.   Photo of origional and new below.

Where can I get origionals or correct replacement Fuel Line and PCV line clamps?

Decoding/Numbers / Coonling System Numbers Wrong on '69Z
« on: November 08, 2008, 10:16:56 PM »
I pulled out the motor from my 10C Los 69Z for one "last" time, to re-install the origional 186 heads, and check the parts against Jerry MacNisch's book.  I found nearly everything matches.

EXCEPT
The Number on the Fan is wrong according to the book.  It is suppost to be 3947772, but is 3937779 with a date code of H68.  Do I need to find a 3947772 ?

The Radiator doesn't have a tag on the radiator.  The tanks are stamped CB and IH.  There is a tag on the core that the bottom line seams to read IC 1869,  I cannot make out the top line.   Is this also wrong?

Decoding/Numbers / Found Block VIN on 69 Z... Thanks Jerry
« on: September 19, 2008, 02:54:37 AM »
In April 1971 I purchased my 69 Cortez Silver Z28 from a Chrysler Dealers used car lot for $2,389+ tax.

It had virtually all origional parts except wheels, and shift knob.  In '81 I cleaned it up under the hood and had it repainted matching the origional paint. Added a cowl hood and air cleaner, purchased part by part from Cone Bros Chevy in Fullerton.   I entered  a Super Chevy and two Car Craft meets.  I was told by the judges that the engine origional engine compartment paint was not glossy enough, the valve covers should be polished, and the carefully matched paint was too dark when compaired to the restored car two spaces away, a "Magazine featured"  Silver repainted car that came from the factory white (Lary Mendoza's).  A picture of my engine compartment is shown on page 84 of the April '82 Hot Rod article "Muscle Ducts" - Fresh Air from the Factory.

The Body bild date on tag is "I0C", Block Stamped V0927DZ, but no VIN on block to be found.  I had taken the motor out twice to restore but even after hot tanking the block removing all paint I could not find any VIN.  I have a good friend that was a forman at the LA plant and he said it was possible that it was missed.  I bought your book and found out what it would look like, that it was the same as the stamp on the trans, and that it would be faint.

Last weekend I looked at the matching VIN on the M21 trans and removed most paint from the oil filter boss. Found the VIN stamp matching the the car and the VIN stamp on the trans.  The stamp has two different style 5's in the vin, the L is a larger font, and they match exactly, except I cannot make out the "L5" in the third and forth position on the block.

I kept telling others I doubted that some one would spend a lot of time and money to exactly clone a 2 year old car in 1971 that was widely available.

THANK YOU... You have made me very happy to be able to show that the engine is the origional.

PS: There are a few items that are different than a normal 69.  The stripes were '68 style, no spoilers, the cam degrees as if it is the optional off road specification, the front sits lower than factory with shorter springs, etc.  The "story" when I bought it was that is was the street car given to a GM drag racer that had to get rid of it because he now ran a Chrysler Hemi drag car he had just picked up at the dealer ???? !!!
