Originality / How to authenticate
« on: March 06, 2008, 01:02:21 AM »
Hi,
I have had this red 68 rs/ss 396 conv. for 10 years and bought it from the second owner who owned it for 25yrs. It is original as far as I can tell and never been restored. I know it is rare, but just how rare? I did not find a build sheet under the seat. I drive it about 50 mi a year and the OD shows 67K It was built the 3rd week of November 1967 at the NOR plant. When I have shown the car (which is rarely), people seem to get excited about the Tri-volume horn, Light monitoring system, and (air) Rear trunk release. It was reported to me when I purchased the car that a Dealer in Seattle, WA ordered the car specially optioned to sit on the showroom floor to boost sales. Unfortunately the dealer does not have records back that far. I have had people express interest in buying it and I don't know what it is worth. It is definitely a "20 footer" but no dents, interior is not torn, carpet is good, engine compartment is nice but 40yrs old. I recently went to a Corvett restorer who has restored a few Camaros and he appraised it at over $80K in the condition it is in. He said restored it would go for much more but would probably cost $30k-$40k+ to restore it. He noted that none of his guide books even listed all of the options this car has.
I went out and bought the "White" book and other guides but was looking for more specific help as these options seem to be pretty rare.
How rare is this car? Is there any person/group that can authenticate it?
Thanks,
-Jeff
