Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1967 AIR pump numbers decode?
« on: December 01, 2022, 06:25:31 PM »
Hi all,
Wow. Gotta give thanks to Kurt for posting my photos. Also big kudos to PetesL48 for all of his research.
However, I think I'm left with more questions than answers because it looks like my pump is a 1969 replacement. Funny how it fits so well and has the 4 bolt pulley as well.
I did use the email link to contact PetesL48 directly as now I have plenty of questions on what the correct pump numbers would be and the date code range for stamps as well.
His research does begin to lead me in the correct direction and I hope it can be clarified and added to the CRG smog pump report as I think far more detail is needed there. In fact, after reading it I was concerned my pump could be a replacement but I was really not clear what the correct pump numbers should be and really still don't.
Thanks to all and I hope my questions lead to more clarifications on smog pumps.

Hi again,
I just tried to reach out to Joyce Borrell and I think an earlier poster is correct. She may be out of business. Can anyone in PA confirm? She did an excellent job with my 67 and 68 inside rearview mirrors. Look nice and have the correct Made in USA stamp which the repops don't.
Looks like www.custommirrorrestoration.com which another poster also mentioned is likely the place to go now. They are in PA as well.

Hi,
Ive wanted to restore my 1967 remote mirror, date coded 10-DMI-6, with Joyce Borrell of 726 S.4th Ave Lebanon,PA as I heard about her at an NCRS show. However, no hint on how to get "glass" of of remote and she did not want me to send whole chrome unit to her. I'd be interested in name address of your chrome shop tip and how to separate mirror from unit

Decoding/Numbers / 1967 AIR pump numbers decode?
« on: November 28, 2022, 07:51:30 PM »
Hi,

I sent an email to Kurt Sonen on 11/25 with photos but thought I'd ask here on the forum too.

So my AIR pump was on my 67 when I purchased the car in 1985 and has been working fine all these years until the main bearing finally quit a few weeks ago. I was about to send it out to Bill Hodel of Massillon, Ohio for a rebuild when I looked at the numbers and wondered if it is the correct pump? I'll include info and ask if you can help. Thanks!

Car is 67 convertible 11B LOS with 327/210 and powerglide. Engine pad stamp is VII23MF and the car was sold new in late November 1966 at De Long Chevrolet of San Rafael, CA.

My AIR pump numbers are as follows:

1. The front casting behind the 4 bolt pulley is 5696122
2. The stamp on the tab on top of the pump is 21791U (this is what has me most concerned)
3. The rear part of the pump where the hoses connect and is painted black has a casting of 5696132.

I'm rusty on sending photos but maybe Kurt could send the photos from my email to him of Friday 11/25 ?

Thanks again for your excellent site and all you do for the 1st Gen Camaro hobby,
Brian Birkeland

Hi,
I added a space saver to my 68 convertible many years ago when Steve Pardini gave me one from his attic. I could not find any info on where exactly to mount it so just had to improvise. I seem to think it was a $20 option and about 1000 68s ordered it. We need someone who has a factory one installed. Otherwise, I could send photos but the two I have from my iphone are 1.1MB each so not sure how to post here.

That’s it! A week or two to a few months. Just what I wanted to hear!
I hope you eventually post that on the website.
Thanks for all you do for the Camaro hobby

Hi Bert,
Thanks but still doesn't really answer my "date code" window question very specifically. While I understand the concept it still is tough for a "home" restorer to know what "time period" to look for. While I realize there are differences for popular/common versus rare/unusual engine or accessory combinations I think most of us are looking to get it right with the "time frame" as it relates to engine stamp/cowl code dating.
Is there any way you could come up with an approximate window/time frame?
Thanks very much,
Brian
PS: I think plenty of members would like to know before they go out on the search for the needle in the haystack part to rebuild. Thanks again!

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Body stamp dates vs chassis number
« on: February 03, 2022, 10:06:16 PM »
Hi,
I think the USCC numbers are ok and I have two examples in my garage which fit.

#1 67 LOS car vin L122130 with cowl tag 11B (hidden body numbers match vin)

#2 68 LOS car vin L302530 with cowl tag 09C (hidden body numbers match vin)

So, a very small sample size but at least it is a random example which fits the data provided.

I hope it helps,
Brian

Hi Ed,

So you are saying on the "base" engines that alternators, carbs, voltage regulators, starters and similar "dated" engine components would likely be dated within a few weeks or a month before engine stamping but "rarer" engines would more likely to be dated a couple of months before?

That makes sense and I think the part number and date information would be great research topics for the website. If I didn't have Alan Colvin's book I'd really be in the dark. With additional info from those that replied I get it now. Just think a central "report" on the website would be helpful to many and would reduce the need to answer so many questions here.

Thanks to you and others at CRG for what you do for the hobby,
Brian

Hi again,
So to clarify with a cowl tag of 09C and engine stamp of T0907EE what is the date code range I’m looking for? I have not seen this “range” listed anywhere.
Thanks very much,
Brian

Thanks for replies especially clarification on part numbers.
So, date code range is from a few days to a few weeks from engine stamp date for LOS cars?

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I have a few more questions:

While the Colvin book leans towards 1100794 what about 1100813 for a power steering car? I think the 794 is w/o PS? Am I reading it wrong?

Also, what is an acceptable "date" and is it before cowl tag or engine pad stamp? How much before especially for a Van Nuys car which I'd assume is some distance away from where alternators were made?

Thanks, Brian

Oh, no air conditioning. Thanks !

Hi all,
I emailed Kurt Sonen and he suggested I post here.

I'm looking for the correct part number and date code for my 68 RS convertible.
Here are the particulars on the car:
1. Cowl tag 09C built in Van Nuys
2. Shipping data report 9/14/67
3. Original dealership Cormier Chevrolet of Long Beach, CA
4. Engine pad stamp 18L 302530  T0907EE
5. Engine is 327/275hp with power steering and powerglide

The Chevrolet by the Numbers book by Colvin is a bit unclear about the part number I should be looking for and I'm also not sure how many days or weeks before the cowl tag date or engine pad stamp date I should be looking for as well. I'm assuming the 37 amp alternator would be most correct?

I enjoy your site and feel fortunate to be the second owner of this numbers matching 68 Camaro since 1991.

Thanks, Brian
