General Discussion / Re: Fly me to the moon movie
« on: August 11, 2024, 02:43:54 AM »
Im young and dumb, like 16, and took a gamble to go see the movie cause I heard it was about the space race and wanted to waste time on a date I don't know what the movie was about, though I love the '60s. The opening scene in the Ford Oval Office with Scarlett Johanson bad-mouthing the executives about how "A 428 Police Interceptor is rated at 335hp but the Chevy 396 is considered a small block with 375hp in a better handling car". Then the super scoop adds. My girlfriend and I just tuned in for a moment and I loved the accuracy, but the movie was also excellent. Oh and the older crowd in front of me got a kick out of it too.

Ironically the only inaccuracy with cars was the 3 Astronaut Vettes that were Red in the movie and not Gold but who's counting? I loved the movie

Decoding/Numbers / Original Glass?
« on: May 09, 2023, 02:34:35 AM »
Over the last few months nothing much has happened over here with the 69 Camaro, car 9L512227. Except something extraordinary has happened. The previous previous owner reached out to me about the car from the 80s… or his son. User Jonathan Mouchets Father and uncle purchased my dads camaro in Atlanta in 1985 for $2500. The story? It was Driven off of a bridge  between the Georgia SC line! It was then swapped from a 350 to a 307. My father, the owner for the last 29 years passed away on March 6th leaving me, his 15 year old son the will to the car. 2 weeks later Jonathan reached out to me saying he didn’t know where it had been and if it was the water car by any chance and I showed him the subframe that had been cut out and replaced from a wreck that kept the whole car in tact but didnt know what camaro they had was the water car. The thing that im wondering is about the window date coding. The car was built 12/12/68. The window codes are scattered and the codes are lapping 1968, 1969 and 1980’s codes. I cant tell whats which cause of the variety in times. The car was built in 68, the glass could have been replaced from another 69 but the car might have 1980s replacement glass, I just cant tell. Can anyone help confirm all the dates?

Perhaps you can ask Pete Brock about Owen Keown Chevrolet:

https://bre2.net/

Best answer yet  ;D Though, all good things must come to an end, even if before my time

No wonder why my Camaro got along well when introduced to the snake tank; it was practically sold by the pet store

Owen Keown Chevrolet had their parts department and repair facilities on Carter Avenue, next to the buildings where Shelby American had their assembly plant before moving to LAX:

I know the owner of a few original Shelby cars, notably CSX3173, maybe I should ask him if he knows anything about it other than this awesome stuff

OWEN KEOWN CHEVROLET CO
4141 LINCOLN BLVD
MARINA DEL REY, CA

Not much info about the business but it appears the owner died in 1972. HERE'S his obit.

Ed

Thanks so much. I researched and found that it is a Harley Davidson dealership now, and upon looking into it found some incredible facts

1. The original building which was once the Dealership was purchased in 1986 by the guys who owned another dealership that moved into the space. It was 20,000 sq ft. They doubled that eventually to 40,000 square feet. If you look on Google Maps, you can see the original building on the left if you are looking at the building dead on in all its glory.

2. Believe it or not, it is a 3-MINUTE WALK from 1042 Princeton Dr. which was SHELBY AMERICAN from 1962-1967. If you look on eBay, there are a bunch of Shelby invoices to Owen Keown Chevrolet for misc. Ford parts because they were so close. This info as I am also the caretaker of the 1967 GT500 #790. My uncle and father have these cars because they were their dream cars and growing so obsessed to these cars is amazing that they were built and sold in the same places.

I hope anyone else here can use this to their advantage.

I just got an NCRS Shipping Data report in the mail, for 124679L512227. "The Original Dealer is Owen Keown Chevrolet, Dealer Code 271, Zone 20"

I am initially here to ask if anyone knows where it was located and any possible information about it, and if this particular data is accurate.

Originality / Special Order Paint Numbers?
« on: October 27, 2022, 02:08:39 AM »
Is there any data that tells what color percentages were produced? I am curious how many Camaro's were once identical to my Special Order Paint 1969.

Looking for timing at base idle speed.
Have you verified the choke plate fully opens and stays open when it’s warm?

No, but I don't want to run it because I was previously aware that I could fuel-wash the cylinders. What I have checked is the resistance to the plate with my finger. It is pretty soft and easy to actuate. But I will check asap. Will also get a timing reading

This carb shows as a manual choke. Assuming it’s fully open when driving?

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fut-41650xb-1Q

What is the timing set to?
What coil are you using?
Distributor?
Spark plugs?

They have shared part numbers which is stupid but mine has an electric choke

The timing is around 35 I think

Coil is an MSD Blaster and Distributor

Dont know plugs off of my head

Was the motor broken in with the current Carb? Didn't notice it smoking during break in? What size motor, specs.? It's pulling some great vacuum numbers. I'd check the simple things first... float levels, choke fully open, timing. At 20" of vacuum power valve should 10., but that won't make it smoke unless you get bigger than 10 or it's blown.

The float level is good, the FST has sight glass on the metering blocks so I can see that. I didn't break it in but I have the video from the guy literally 5 minutes after he broke it in. He said it ran perfectly and had no smoke. When he drove us around in it it did a bit on start but not much. When we brought it home it coaled the ground. On that 3-hour drive me and my dad had it lost ground at a pep boys. while going home it coal rolled for 1/4 a mile and at a red light but we were about a mile from home. Then it promptly dieseled when it cut off.

All the specs

GM 12691673 Block (L31 Vortec 350) with stock hypereutectic bottom end (Brand new not rebuilt, cast 11/7/21)

Comp Cams XE262HR Cam

Edelbrock E-TEC-200 Heads, ported, polished, new springs, seats, valves

Comp Roller Tip Rockers (1.6. Scorpion rollers would not fit under valve cover)

Edelbrock intake (not sure what exactly will check tomorrow)

Headman headers

runs 180 degrees Fahrenheit has never seen 190 degs.

Is the power valve in the carb matched for the engine idle vacuum?
My initial thought is the power valve is opening during idle and/or too soon while driving.

Mike

The Carb is an FST RT-X 41650XB, with smaller than stock main jets, installed literally a week ago (stock was 69prime/63second). the power valve in the primary/secondary is 6.5/76 and the engine vacuum is an average of 20. The jets changed nothing. The engine was broken in initially for 30 minutes at 2000 rpm. The engine has never seen anything over 3000 rpm, and again, has 110 miles on it. Has idled for like 15 minutes at a time  :( max but only once and no more, my ignorance. Dieseled once, in 80-degree weather after 3 hours of driving which was the time I realized it may be rich. I am questioning the reliability of that carb because I cannot find any tuning info/positive reviews of it. The engine vacuum is 20

No gas in oil surprisingly. And it doesn't trail down the road, just when parked for like a minute. Though, if it did, I would call the motor toasted

My uncle has the 67 Shelby GT500 stamp. Obviously, cause he has Shelby #790 and my Dad has the 69 Camaro SS. should get him the stamp.

General Discussion / Sooty Camaro
« on: October 25, 2022, 02:44:26 AM »
Ok. So, this is going to be a bit of a long paragraph. I am the son of the owner of 9L512227. Our beloved Camaro recently had a motor built and installed in it as the car's 3rd motor so we know. The car has been a beast. The motor has exactly 110.6 miles on it from brand new from GM (Part# 12691673) but it is running very rich. Fast idle doesn't work, it blows black gas smoke going down the road, and has downturned exhaust pipes blowing toward the ground which shows another problem, which is that in warm or cold weather, or warm or cold engine temps, the darn thing blows sooty gas across the ground and all the time. The scenario most recent is that we got it back from our mechanic the other day, and Dad decided to surprise me by driving it home. When he pulled in after driving it 6 miles, it was blowing blue smoke. He enthusiastically jumps out, and goes "It's back he said to drive it" and responded with "Why is it burning oil? SHUT IT OFF!" He goes "It is perfect it drove fine I don't care if it blows up". So I explained to him that we may glaze the cylinders and destroy the block/pistons with this mess and he is stubborn about it.

I understand how carburetors work. Yes, it seems as if it is very rich. Our mechanic took it off and put it in smaller jets. The plot twist is that it is an FST, which I want to switch to an Edelbrock for fuel economy and street performance/easy tunability.

Also, why does the engine smoke oil (blue) smoke on deceleration and when parking only, and only when warm? It does not smoke oil smoke when cold leading me to think that clearances have changed with the piston rings already because it's been hard to start with it being rich recently (I seriously hope not because I don't want to see the car torn down for the 3rd time in 3 years). If anyone can help, please do, your knowledge is appreciated.

I dont but ditto with knowing if such a thing readily exists in detail because it would aid in winter drives...
