General Discussion / Re: CE codes..how far out date wise?
« on: February 04, 2020, 03:01:11 AM »
Ok, so a CE block Is Chevrolet/Engine/year digit/sequence number.   So in my case I would be looking for casting numbers and dates for a L78 spec engine for the year it was made. I.E 69/70 etc Right? I know I will never have the born with engine. This would be the next closest way to go, as I certainly am not going to make a fake, it is what it is.  So I could look up casting numbers for blocks, heads, cranks, etc for a L78 to match up to the year of CE manufacture and be close to original as I could get. Does anyone know how complete a CE engine would be? I.E short block/long block or complete engine? Being I have nothing date correct on the 396 in the car currently I wonder how far I should go as far as sourcing date and part number correct carb, distributor etc. If the CE engines were complete from pan to carb it would certainly be easier sourcing date/number correct stuff for 68/69/70 than 1967. Opinions?

General Discussion / CE codes..how far out date wise?
« on: February 03, 2020, 08:59:15 PM »
Hello all, I have a 1967 "k" code L78 car. Motor is long gone. Finding a MQ block is like finding a unicorn, yet still would not be correct. I have been able to find a few CE coded blocks cast in 1969 or 1970. Being that the cars came with a 5/50 powertrain warranty, these dates would be correct right? Does the warranty L78 have specific number blocks/heads etc that I would need to look for? And did the warranty motors get vin stamped at the dealer? Thanks for your input!

Restoration / Vinyl top seams
« on: February 03, 2020, 10:46:30 AM »
Hello all, have a fairly new vinyl top that the seams appear to be lifting, not from the body but the folded edge. The folded edges appear to be lifting and not tight. I have searched quite a few forums and watched a ton of youtube videos on install and or repair, but nothing on what I have going on. I was thinking about ordering a model airplane heat sealer iron with a teflon foot to try no retrain the edge tight. Anyone have any knowledge on this? Attached is some pics...

Decoding/Numbers / Re: M21 partial vin help

I think I will join up on one of the chevelle sites and post this thing up. I would like to see if it can be reunited with its car. Sad thing is the upper case ears have been welded, however it looks to be a decent repair. The ears and holes are nice and squared up and surfaces are flat. Guy had this thing mounted up in a 56 chevy, with a truck bellhousing, so the nosecones was never centered. Good thing was it actually has the m21 gearset in it. Only bad gear is the reverse gear. Found the correct number case on ebay for 300.00, date code is close.

Decoding/Numbers / M21 partial vin help
« on: January 29, 2020, 03:48:00 AM »
Hello all, I bought a m21 transmission for the guts, and was hoping to sell the case. I am trying to figure out what vehicle this was originally installed in, but the numbers dont make sense. the partial vin reads 019B413475. From what I have read this should break down to   }01{ body style  }9{ year  }B{ as baltimore assembly }413475{ as sequential body number. I know no camaros were ever built in baltimore, but does someone know what a 01 body syle would be?

Thats what  I was hoping to hear...The car is number 7L102925. So that makes it number 2925 off the line then right? I have no problem with sharing the cowl tag or stamps, is there any risk of posting them public, if not I will post them. The K car is a interesting piece as well, it is a L78 car with no options. We have the proteco-plate on this one. Radio delete, m21, 4.11 rear, no console, no power steering or brakes. After researching the protecto plate, on a whim we started researching the original owners name, ended up finding him living in the same city. Got in contact with him and talked to him, turns out he bought the car just for drag racing. He told us he never registered the car just raced it, and said he pulled the L78 out after three months and installed a crate L88, then immediately blew the transmission up. He dosent remember what he did with the original motor, I was hoping he knew of its whereabouts!

Hello all, new to the forum. I am currently restoring/working on two 67 camaros. One is a early 3rd week of september 1966 SS/RS 350 car. The other is a L78 "K" code SS 396. I am going to be needing alot of help with some of the fine details. First the SS 350, The owner is a good friend of mine and is the second owner, he aquired this car in 1974. The car is mostly numbers matching. The block, heads, intake and exhaust manifolds, all the main case pieces of the muncie etc. The only pieces not matching are the starter, and distributor. Car is currently at body shop being repainted in factory ermine white. My main question is did ALL SS 350 receive the cross flags/350 under the camaro script on front fenders? Fenders appear to be original to the car and according to current owner they were never changes as long as he has owned it. His fenders do not have any holes plugged or filled where the cross flag/350 emblems would go. We are trying to restore this car back to original configuration, I have not been able to find any info on this topic. Thank you for adding me, hope to hear some good info!! Ryan
