General Discussion / Re: 69 Hood Louver Original Silver Paint Color
« on: May 23, 2023, 11:36:31 PM »
Thanks for the input. My originals had very little paint left on them, plus what was there was so faded it was hard to tell what true color they were.
Now to find the color code for Argent Silver paint.

General Discussion / 69 Hood Louver Original Silver Paint Color
« on: May 23, 2023, 12:34:37 PM »
I am in the process of restoring my original hood louvers on my 69 RS/SS and was hoping for some input. I have had them rechromed and just finished epoxy priming them in preparation for painting the black insert and the silver on the outside of the stacks. Does anyone know what
the correct silver paint would be to keep them original? I have heard it was the same as that used on the rally wheels but I can’t find anything to confirm that. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the pictures Joe that really helps. To clarify the silver isn't painted (for lack of better terms) on the floor between each stack?

Restoration / 69 SS Hood Louver Help
« on: August 13, 2022, 03:16:48 PM »
Hi all, I apologize if this topic has been discussed before but I am having a hard time nailing down certain information on my hood louvers. I have a second week of January build, numbers matching 69 SS 350 and I am currently working on restoring the original hood louvers. I have had them re-chromed and I am now trying to find out if the outside of the stacks would have been painted gray/silver or left chrome. Prior to restoration I noted that the only original paint that was left on them was a little bit of black on the indent area on the base of the louvers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Originality / Re: Flex Plate Inspection Cover Help

Bob, thanks for your input. Then I guess that would mean I would have had a 153 tooth originally? If so then what starter would have been put on at the factory?

Using your measuring method it looks like about 6 3/4 inches. I tried attaching a photo of my measurement of the plastic one but being new at this it wouldn't work. ( Most likely operator error) I also measured the starter opening and it is approx. 3" wide.

Kevin, your cover looks like the hole configuration as that on my TH350 from what I can see. My question is, is the bottom of the pan deeper on yours than the plastic one to allow for a 168 tooth flex plate. My plastic cover has a part number of 6261091 on the inside of it as Pete mentioned, but as I said earlier the 168 hits the bottom of it and won’t bolt up.
Would it be possible to PM me for some measurements?

Originality / Flex Plate Inspection Cover Help
« on: May 21, 2022, 10:43:58 PM »
Hi all,

I’m looking for some help figuring out the correct inspection cover for my 69 RS/SS coupe that I am restoring. It’s a numbers matching 350 300hp with a turbo 350. I’ve had both the engine and tranny rebuilt and I’m now ready to put them back in the car. The car came without a starter but there was a 153-tooth flex plate and a plastic inspection cover found amongst the parts that came with the car. I’ve installed a nice rebuilt 8338 starter and a 168-tooth flex plate which I am being told was correct for that engine and trans. Now when I try to put the inspection cover that I have on the tranny it hits the bottom of the flex plate to the point it will grind a hole in it.

Wasn't the factory inspection plate metal and was there a unique one for the 168 tooth?
After searching the different parts outlets I’ve not had any luck finding a cover that would work so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Originality / Transmission Parts Plating?
« on: January 20, 2022, 09:03:33 PM »
Hi guys,

I’m looking for a little help regarding my original 69 turbo 350 transmission. As part of the cars full restoration I had the transmission rebuilt and would like to have the dipstick tube and linkage brackets re-plated back to what they would have been originally. Someone told me that they were zinc is that correct?

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Protect-O-Plate Options Help
« on: January 07, 2022, 10:24:41 PM »
Thanks Ed and Kurt for the information it really helps fill in some of those history gaps that I’ve been trying to unravel.

One other quick question considering a timeline involving the POP.

According to the cowl tag, the car is a second week of January (01B) build and the Protect-O-Plate information shows that it was purchased at Nickey Chevrolet on June 13, 1969. Do either of you know how long it took from the time a car was ordered until it arrived at the dealership?
The reason I ask is that I have been told that the original owner ordered the car which was given to him as a college graduation present. So, I’m trying to see if the dates work out

Thanks Ed, I did check the CRG Protect-O-Plate decoding section and found it very informative. That’s where I got most of the decoding for my POP, but like most things the deeper you get into something the more questions come up.
So would it be safe to say that a N33 tilt steering wheel option and U17 gauge option would not appear on the 69 POP.

Decoding/Numbers / Protect-O-Plate Options Help
« on: January 06, 2022, 04:24:06 PM »
Hi guys, I’ve searched all over looking for information about specific decoding of the Protect-O-Plate but haven’t been able to find what I’m looking for. Sorry if I get to wordy here but I thought it best to give a little background.

I’ve been in the process of restoring my 69 SS/RS for four years and I’m starting to finally see daylight. As the car has a fairly solid history I’ve done my best to staying true to its originality. It was primarily a one owner local car which was ordered here in northern Illinois where it has always remained. One key thing I have always been missing is the documentation, that is until a week ago. I was surprised when I was contacted by the person I got the car from who had just found some documentation including the Protect-O-Plate. After getting the shocking news I didn’t hesitate in getting them in hand and start filling in some of the blanks of missing information I always wanted to know.

I have been able to decode the majority of the plate and was thrilled to see all the numbers from the driveline match what is on the car. The part I am having a problem with is the options section of the plate. Mine shows “1 3 3”, which I think is power brakes, disc brakes and AM radio. The car does have all three of these but there are other options that I found on the car that aren’t on the plate.

I guess my main question is were only certain options listed on the Protect-O-Plate? Somewhere I read that due to limited space on the card only certain power options were on it such as power windows, power seats, brakes etc. but I don’t know if that’s accurate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
