Originality / Re: O-1 convertible paint
« on: August 18, 2008, 02:24:15 PM »
What would enamel reducer do to lacquer?  I also find it hard to believe that the first batch of O-1 cars could have been painted in enamel, at least in the normal assembly line due to the different flash times, drying temperatures etc. but the guys over at camaropacecars.com seem to have at  some evidence that at least some of them were.  Now I could never get them to tell me how many of the first batches they have found enamel on, and of those that they do have, they know for sure none have been reapainted.  If I'm GM Im not going to have a batch of cars that are going to be on public display at a very high visibility function get painted with a product the assembly plants are not used to using, just to get a slighlty more durable finish on them.  I was always under the impression that "show cars" made for the last 50 or so years were always painted with lacquer finish anyway due to its ability to be polished to a mirror finish, as well as the ability to put more layers of paint down in a shorter period of time without getting to thick a film thickness.

I guess I'll just have to wait to see what evidence the other site really has.  Then if they really are painted in enamel I'll let them explain how it was done in a plant setup to paint lacquer.

General Discussion / Re: 1968 Z28 real or not?
« on: August 16, 2008, 11:43:28 AM »
Obviously an MO coded 302 engine, a Muncie Aluminum cased transmission, a 12 bolt rear axle with gears higher than 3.55 (3.73 is by far most common), 4 leaf rear springs. front disc brakes, 15 inch wheels.  Thats about it, but you need to be able to tell that those things are original to the car, or have been added over time.  Look at the codes on everything and make sure they all go together, look for original tire stickers on the glove box door, tag on the radiator, codes on the alternator etc.

Maintenance / Re: Console gauges problems
« on: August 15, 2008, 08:42:19 PM »
Nope, consoile lights are only on when the dash lights are on.  They should operate exactly the same as your console shift indicator lamps (if its an auto).  They also dim when the dash lights dim.  Dash lights are connected to the console via a gray wire in the number 10 position (third from the left on the bottom of the dash connector looking into the connector from the console.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1968 axle Stamps. a couple of questions
« on: August 05, 2008, 10:59:41 PM »
Probably a BP code which is also a 10 bolt 2.56 axle but is not a posi axle.  Maybe the P is in upside down.

GMpartsdirect is a dealer in North Carolina (I think) they sell GM parts, but they also sell the same licensed GM repro parts that most of the Camaro parts places sell.  By the part number (it doesn't fit into GMs longer part number scheme and has no correlation to previous Service part numbers) I would suspect that these rings would be the same ones that Ricks, Year One, or any of the others sell.

Is that for a set?  Thats not an original GM part number for sure, its probably some kind of repro part number that GM licences and sells.  Those 4 clip attachment setups suck, they rattle if the rivets attaching them to the ring get even a little loose.

Originality / Re: re. 67/68 multiplex set up
« on: July 30, 2008, 03:23:50 PM »
The hookups are in there, at least in general showing wire harnesses and locations of components.  The actual wiring connections are only in the Delco service manuals for the hardware you have.  What are the actual part numbers on the paper tags of your various peices?

Which 8 track do you have?  You need a 7307831 setup for a non console multiplex setup.  An 8 track/multiplex radio setup doesn't use the 4 knob passenger side multiplex control that you see in non console multiplex radio only setups.  That 4 knob part was an early 68 option for a multiplex only radio.  I don't think you could get both a multiplex and an 8 track in a 68 until about 1/2 way thru the model year.

My 04L trunklid with a run code of T19 (I think - I'll look tonight) stamped into it doesn't have tabs, and it does have the 4 bolt holes in it for the T/A spoiler.

Mild Modifications / Re: Cowl Induction with A/C
« on: June 18, 2008, 04:07:30 PM »
I think he's talking about the old cowl induction ductwork that connected to the firewall, before GM cam out with the cowl induction hood.  If so, theres no way to do it, since the A/C suitcase sits right were the connection to the firewall was made.

Restoration / Re: New subframe bushings and fender alignment problem
« on: June 13, 2008, 10:54:44 AM »
The smallest diameter bushing goes under the radiator support, of the two larger diameter bushings the thicker pair go under the firewall support and the thinner pair go under the rear support.

I've got polyurethane bushings so I can't tell if the original bushings under the radiator support are different thicknesses, but if they are, the thin one should be between the frame and the core support, that will lower the front end, and close the gap at the bottom of the doors.

The 2 front bushings are different than the 4 under the car, make sure you didn't mix them up.

Originality / Re: 1969 AM/FM radio option
« on: June 10, 2008, 10:46:08 AM »
All it means is that the receiver itself installs the same as the AM radio, ie it has jam nuts on the volume and tuning knob threads, and a rear support strap.  The receivers themselves are different, but the mounting method is the same.

Maintenance / Re: Temp Gage Problem / Question
« on: June 02, 2008, 01:13:09 AM »
Sounds like the resistor on the back of the gauge has open circuited.  That 86 ohm resistor is what controls the needle moving downscale from hot to cold.  If thats open circuited then the gauge will read off scale hot as soon as 12V is applied to it (key in run position) and not return to cold, even it the green wire is disconnected from the sender.  If you have an original guage, the resistor is a wirewound resistor external to the gauge across the back of the left and right gauge terminals, if the guage is an OER style the resistor is internal to the gauge.

Restoration / Re: 1967 front spoiler braces

No 67's came with spoilers from the factory, so of course there won't be a hole in the subframe for the spoiler brace.
