Decoding/Numbers / Re: Trans date/stamps look OK for a M20 3E car?
« on: February 01, 2009, 04:43:15 PM »
Well good luck with your purchase, hope you get the guarantee in writing.

I've never seen a muncie assembly stamp that high up on the trans (that close to the gasket flange), granted I don't have a huge collection of tranny stamps (maybe a couple of hundred) so there may be some like this one.  Also look at the 5 oclock position below the 3 in the VIN.  I think thats a 1 from the original Muncie assembly code, and if I look real close I thing I can aso see a A next to it to the right.

I don't like the Muncie stamp.  There are a couple of characters that are not "TYPICAL" of the characters used on 69 Muncies.  But I don't have one with that exact date to compare to, so I won't say its not a real stamp at this time, date on the stamp is in the ball park for that VIN number.  I've got an image of a P9C22A stamp on an N6257xx Vin'ed car, but the M20 dates seem to jump around quite a bit.

General Discussion / Re: 69 z28

All Z28s had a 120 mph speedometer.  The 140 was part of COPO 9737 option which added 15" wheels, a larger sway bar and the 140mph speedometer on L72 COPO cars.  It wasn't available on Z28s.  The bellhousing on that car is not original, is probably a Macleod bellhousing.  Lots of things wrong (incorrect) on that car.  Frst the Trim tag does not have the required safety statement on the bottom of it that all cars bound for the US and Canada all have.  Its too late a build to have either a chambered exhaust or 4 wheel disc brakes (although the seller never says they are original).  Tons of incorrect items on the car, like a black grille, wrong master cylinder etc.

Restoration / Re: Looking for rear spoiler studs
« on: January 21, 2009, 04:55:03 PM »
They have different threads on each end with an intergral flat washer (part of the stud itself) in the middle.  They are about 1 1/2" long overall, and the lower threads (into the trunk) are 1/4-20.  The upper (into the spoiler) are more like a wood or self threading type of screw thread.

General Discussion / Re: VIN # versus production line
« on: January 16, 2009, 10:45:09 PM »
The VINs were assigned sequentially when the bodys came thru from Fisher.  The Norwood plant could accomadate about 60 to 80 cars in its body bank so there could be some shuffling at that point, but essentially the cars came off the GM assembly line in VIN seqeuntial order plus or minus a few numbers (example 543210 might be followed by 543230 and might be behind 543220).

Your car is 710 VIN numbers from the one in Jerrys book, so it came off the line within 14 or 15 hours of that one (Norwood made 912 cars a day at capacity and worked two 8 hour shifts)).  Of course that car could have come off the line at 10 pm on one day and yours would have come off around 8 PM the next day, or that car could have come off at 8 am and yours would have come off the line at 10PM the same day.  Impossible to tell.

Restoration / Re: Help with Differences in Door Glass
« on: January 15, 2009, 12:53:16 AM »
Get the date codes off the glass to see if its an early late thing, or if the glass is repro or from a 68.  I have three sets of 69 convertible glass and all of them have an arch on the bottom.  My original glass was made in March of 69.

That red car is an LA built car isn't it.  They were on an overhead rack when they got painted so they were higher off the ground then a Norwood built car which was sitting on a truck on the ground when it was painted.  Hence they got more primer and body color overspray on the undercarraige of the car then a Norwood built car would.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1969 L-78 Pace Car
« on: December 18, 2008, 10:46:08 PM »
I can call my 17 year old checked laquer paint original too and some people would beleive it.  If its really an 05E tag with an 0529 assembled engine, i feel pretty safe in calling it a fake.  If its an 03E tag with an 0529 assembled engine then its probably a real pace car with a transplanted engine.  If its 03E with an 0329 assemble engine then theres the possibility thats its a real L78 pace car.  Until I see pictures of tags, and stamps anything is possible.

Have you seen the tag personally?  Thats around an 03E dated VIN but definately not an 05E.  Of course a May 29th assembled engine is still a problem and obviously not original to the car but the tag might actually match the VIN if its an 03E tag.  If its really an 05E tag then its a fake cowl tag at best.

In a coupe the two V shaped braces are officially called the "rear seat back diagonal brace"  The top edge is part of the "rear seat back shelf panel assembly".  In a convertible its part of the floor pan assembly.

On an LOS built car there will be one on top of the gas tank, on a NOR built car theres a 99.9% you won't find one.  If it was left in the car it was an accident, they were all supposed to be removed from the car prior to the end of the assembly line.

Maintenance / Re: 1969 Big Block Failed to Start!
« on: November 29, 2008, 01:04:26 PM »
A heat soaked starter will usually give you a click, and the lights will dim, if they were on.  Sounds more like a problem with the wiring between the ignition switch and the solenoid on the starter.  My wires were all deteriorated and had some oil inside the jacket of the wire between the rear corner of the block and the solenoid and did the same thing years ago.  I replaced that section of wire and routed it a little further away from the exhaust manifolds, and haven't had the problem since.
