Well,

Based on the bad condition of my originals ( badly pitted & rusted ), what do you think my chances are of getting
good ones?  I am assuming that 10-bolt & 12-bolt brake backing plate mounting bolts are the same since the plates
are the same.

If anyone has a sacrificial rear that they gets these 8 bolts & nuts off of, I'm your man.........  ::)

Originality / Re: Correct finish(es) on 69 12-bolt Camaro rear

John,

A couple of additional questions for you.

To "properly" restore my 12-bolt rear, should I put the brake drums on, mask the wheel mounting studs, then paint it all black?

What about the axle flange itself?  Should I remove the brake drum and paint it black all over ( inner & outer surfaces )?

Since you mentioned the pinion yolk, should this be a cast iron ( natural ) color?  BTW, was that yoke installed after it was
put in the car?  There is a reason for this question.  I am currently trying to source the correct THM400 driveshaft for my
69 L/78 Camaro.  My research has shown that possibly two different u-joints were used.  The standard sized one for all
driveshafts less the THM400, which used a larger u-joint.  If this is true, then the pinion yolk would have have to be
different to accomodate this larger u-joint.  It would only stand to reason that it was later installed, and then possibly be
natural in color.

Do you remember two different pinion yolks as described above?  ???

Hi COPO !

Thanks for the amkproducts.com reference.  They have a ton of stuff.  Loads more than Paragon........

I placed an order, but the head markings are wrong.  One thng at a time - huh? ;D

This is a great topic, of particular interest to me.

I have been wondering about this very issue as it relates to my 69 L/78 - THM400 Camaro.  I have been told so many different things about 69 Camaro THM400
"original" driveshafts that I am truly confused. :-\ ???  So let me add some more questions to the pot......

Did original 69 THM400 equipped SS Camaro driveshafts use the large u-joint on both the front & rear yokes?  How do these u-joints mount?  Do they use the
circular type clips that go over the end of the caps ( like the standard u-joints ), or c-type clips that go on the inside of the yoke?  Can anyone post images for
me?  Also, do THM400 driveshafts have the u-joints rotated inline with each other as opposed to rotated from each other?  I have been told that the 69 Firebirds
with THM400's used the large u-joint driveshaft, but not Camaro.  Did any 69 Firebirds come with THM400's?  Also, if the 69 THM400 Camaro used the large u-joint
dirveshaft, what yoke was used on the rear?  It would stand to reason that this yoke would need to fit the large u-joint as well - correct?  The reason for this question
is that I have never seen a large u-joint pinion yoke for sale anywhere.  Is there a separate part number "back in the day" for the THM400 pinion yoke?

Ultimately, I will need to get the correct dirveshaft and pinion yoke and I can use some assistance here.

Thanks,
Steve

Well, here's an addendum to this post:

I just got off the phone with Paragon ( Corvette parts ).  They have a pretty extensive reproduction program for bolts and related hardware.

Unfortunately, they don't have these particular bolts in their inventory.  That seems strange because Vettes also used brake backing plates
on the rear ends.  But, they were disc brakes as I recall.

Still, any thoughts as to where I can locate NOS bolt inventory like this?  ???

William,

So, would the drums have been installed on the rear for painting,
or painted as a separate process?  In addition, how would the
black painting process for the rear extend to the axle flanges?

In other words, if the brake backing plates and axles were installed,
then the whole assembly painted, would the black just overspray
the axle flanges, or were they liberally coated?

It's these details that always get you......  ::)

Originality / Correct finish(es) on 69 12-bolt Camaro rear
« on: March 02, 2006, 05:42:29 PM »
Several weeks ago, there was a thread here on the CRG about painting the rear correctly in the 1969 Camaro.  I can't seem to find that
thread, so I will ask a question which I don't think was addressed anyway.

It appears that the rear assembly was painted black.  I believe JohnZ pointed this out clearly.  My question concerns the corrent finish
on the axle flanges.  Would these be cast iron in color ( natural ) or black also?  For the sake of clarity, axle flange refer to the plate at
the end of the axle onto which the brake drum & wheel are mounted.  Also, what about the correct finish on the yoke assembly that
mounts to the pinion gear.  Would this be natural cast iron as well, or black?   ???

I am having my rear restored as I write this and I forgot to get this information earlier.  ::)

Thanks,
Steve

Hi everyone,

I'm in a bit of a pickle here.  I am currently having my Camaro's 12-bolt rear rebuilt and I forgot to source the original bolts, nuts & split lock washers
that secure the brake backing plates to the axle tubes.  All but one snapped while being removed.  One that I saved appears to be a grade 5 "TR"
head marking fine thread bolt.  There are eight ( bolt, lock washer & nut ) sets total required; four for each side.

Where can I get these on an immediate basis?  Originality counts for me here, so I want the right parts.

Has anyone else gone through this ?  Image shows only surviving bolt and correct washer/nut.

Thanks,
Steve

Originality / Re: Question of build date vs. rear assembly date
« on: March 02, 2006, 04:12:28 AM »
Kurt S can probably tell you how that spread compares to other similar cars in the database, but the original 4.10 axle in my 02D '69Z is dated February 19th (the car came off the line on February 27th).

The "selection" process was simple - the operator looked at the Chassis Broadcast, took his hoist to the rack with those axles, grabbed the next axle in the rack, and loaded it on the chassis carrier; nobody paid any attention to dates. The axle racks came out of the rail car, were stacked in off-line storage, and were taken to the line one rack at a time. Axle racks held four axles each.

Thanks for chimming-in on this John.  I was hoping you were on-line.

John, that makes perfect sense.  However, how does a rear just "sit around" in a rack
for 4 months before it gets selected.  If a rack only held 4 rears, it would stand to reason
that the racks were turned-over on a daily or regular basis.  This is the cause for my confusion.

Kurt, by the way, I am referring to a 1970 model.

Hey JohnZ!

What's with that plugged off vacuum advance line?  Looks like the SMOG pump diverter valve isn't functional........

Originality / Question of build date vs. rear assembly date
« on: March 01, 2006, 03:19:32 AM »
Hi everyone,

I have a fast question about a situation that I ran into recently.  I am helping a friend restore an L/78 and the build date of the car is 02C with the rear assembly
date of mid-october.  This is verified by the POP and window sticker.

My question is this.  Four months seems an aweful long time for a 12-bolt rear to be sitting around.  This rear was a 3.55 posi.  Can anyone tell me the approximate
procedure for selecting components for assembly "back in the day"?  Perhaps JohnZ is near by.........

Thanks,
Steve

John,

Where did you find that white plastic "T" vacuum fitting that feeds the SMOG system's diverter valve?

I need one for my L/78.

John,

Happen to have an image of what an original plug for the standard speedo-cable hole would look like?

Restoration / Re: 12 bolt restoration

The rear axle assembly (housing, tubes, diff, rear cover, backing plates and drums and parking brake cables) was painted at the axle plant as a completed assembly just before it was placed in the shpping rack; the brake pipes and center block were installed later at the car assembly plants.

John,

Is it your considered opinion then that the entire rear should be painted the same percentage of gloss black?  While we are on this subject, what
do you consiider the closest paint ( gloss content ) for the rear axle assembly?
