Originality / Re: Gas tank and heater box markings
« on: February 05, 2022, 11:32:06 PM »
I remember when someone from industrial engineering would go out into the assembly plant with a stop watch and do a time study on an operation.  When I was at Van Nuys, you basically had about a minute to perform your operation and most of the work was not easy.  The plant was also not air conditioned and it would get really hot in the summer, especially on the second floor where we used water-based paint.

I left GM and went to McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach, CA.  I had to submit the Program Cost Estimate to the Air Force for the C-17, which was based on actuals, standards, realization factors, out-of-position work, etc.  I had an spreadsheet which had inputs for touch labor and sustaining effort and would have to manual change the lot break points, based on requests from the Air Force for future production lot buy scenarios.  I got really good changing learning curves and doing parametric estimates as during the early days of the C-17, there was a concern about unit cost, mostly due to budget constraints.  I don't believe we ever produced more than 16 C-17s in any production lot, even though the assembly plant, Bldg. 54, was designed to produce over 24 planes.  I laugh when I hear what a great the C-17 is as when I was on the Lot 4, 5, and 6 negotiation team, we were always being told the program was going to be cancelled!

I have to admit I liked working more at GM.  When I visited the plant at Bowling Green, they didn't stop the line when changing shifts as the assembly line moved so slowly that it wasn't necessary!

Scott - Perhaps your 1990 Grand Prix was a company car for Hank Haga, who liked Pontiacs.  When Hank worked on the RS Camaro and visited Van Nuys, he would always drive over in a Pontiac Trans Am. - Mark

In the March 2022 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines, the first 1969 Pontiac Trans Am was displayed at MCACN 2021 and it was reported that the car was a "company car" and wasn't sold to the public until July 20, 1970.

Although I worked at the Van Nuys Plant, beginning in 1978, it is my understanding that efficiency was measured based on the labor standards calculated by industrial engineering for someone to perform a given task on the assembly line.  As GMAD Van Nuys was a 2 story facility and the standards were based on a one story plant, there was an adjustment made (realization factor, if I recall correctly) and after daily production was concluded, an efficiency report was transmitted to Central Office.  Our scheduling department had some say when we received a build schedule from Central Office, but in the end, we only built cars according to the schedule from Central Office.

My friend's 1968 Z28 was originally ordered from Harry Mann Chevrolet, although I don't remember seeing the POP.  When I looked at someone's 1970 BOSS 302, I noticed that the temporary warranty tag that Ford issued for the car had been glued below the door tag.  When I asked about the tag in 2010, the owner had never noticed it was there and he bought the BOSS 302 in 1977!

I've been to the Long Beach swap meet a few times as I worked close to the event, but didn't find a lot of stuff of interest for sale.

I only went to the Pomona swap meet once years ago as a friend was looking for a water pump pulley for his 1968 Z28.  We didn't find the pulley, but I remember seeing some sellers who had a pile of rusty stuff!

I have a friend who owns a 1969 Z28 and when he takes it to our local Cars & Coffee show, he displays the original dealer's invoice and other documentation as he got tired of being asked if it was an real Z28 or not.  I must say that even in Southern California, it is rare to see a first generation Z28 or any Camaro.

The machine which punched out VIN plates was located near one of the doors to the computer center as someone would pick them up and take them out to the assembly plant.  You needed a magnetic card to get into the room as we also printed the checks for hourly employees and all disbursement checks and there was a phone on the wall to call to contact us.  Unused VIN plates were stored in a walk-in vault in a locked cabinet.  I remember the machine that stamped the VIN numbers was quite small and made a lot of noise, but we never had a problem with it.

There were data entry clerks at Van Nuys in the mid-1980s and they verified every input.  We were even still using IBM punch cards for some applications and when our sorter needed to be repaired, our IBM customer engineer had to go to their historical records to find the maintenance manual!

At the Van Nuys Plant, the machine which stamped the VIN plates was located in the computer center and the information came from the Vehicle Order Master (VOM).  The only time we would manually stamp a VIN tag was when one was damaged in the assembly plan and we would need the original tag as they would have to be sent to Central Office as we had to account for every tag.  I even stamped a few replacement VIN tags for some 3rd generation F-cars.

Research Topics & Reports / Re: Original ignition coils
« on: December 24, 2021, 09:12:59 PM »
I believe that my friend's 1968 Z28 had its original distributor and after he rebuilt the engine for racing, I remember him power-shifting the motor into second gear and the Sun tach was reading 8700 rpm as I pulled my legs onto the passenger seat as the car didn't have a scatter shield.  I've asked previously about the performance of the 1968 Z28 transistorized distributor, but have never gotten a reply.

According to this article, the ignition coil used on the 1968 Z28 with the transistorized ignition was different:

I believe codes were stamped on most parts, even if they were not for production as if there was a problem with the sheet metal, they would be able to trace the source:
