General Discussion / 1968 LA L78 car - real or not?
« on: July 24, 2011, 05:05:21 PM »
Here is a beautiful LA Camaro L-78 VIN 124378L319578  12B Car on eBay...   http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-Chevrolet-Camaro-SS-396-375-hp-MQ-4-Speed-/230647441582?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item35b3a8a8ae

Seems it has everything but I thought the L78 had to have Power Disc Brakes???  Can anyone explain?  Can anyone confirm this is a real L78 car or not?

here is another eBay listing for a LA L-35 VIN 124378L319430 12C for comparison.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-CAMARO-396-325HP-ExtenResto-Numbers-matching-LV-/160623219159?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item2565e3d1d7

General Discussion / Re: 1969 JL8 Cross Ram at RK Motors Charlotte
« on: July 01, 2011, 04:37:49 PM »
RK motors always post beautifully restored cars without posting any pre-restored photos, any stampings, cowl tags, paperwork or VINs and write Super long descriptions without telling you what you want to know...

... and to always be selling some of the rarest cars around.... leaves me thinking and suspecting this is just another shop producing bogus cars by the 100's

Maybe I am wrong but every car I have asked them (RK Motors) about leaves me wondering... with more questions than answers...

... and for what it is worth I surely would not spend that kind of money without an Iron clad certification from someone such as Jerry M, and a documented history

Does anyone know if this is a trustworthy dealer?

Has anyone had or know of any issues with RK motors?

General Discussion / Another 1969 camaro listed on ebay needing info.

I'm not sure if this L515360 car should be listed under a new listing... so I'll put my comment here with the others...

the POP reads

T1216JH
P9T04
BV1207G

I don't have enough data/knowledge on VN cars but this looks good to me and the resto looks good from the photos... just need to see the actual stampings

I concur, the engine date code stamp and trans stamps are NOT originals, IMHO.

::) There could be others but I would guess highly unlikely.... and these days with so many fakes out there it would need bullet proof documentation, etc... and a complete detailed inspection review by the best in this hobby.

Also note this was a very late VIN car and Jerry states in the cert this is the only one he and other Camaro experts have ever come across...

it is possible, these cars were built by humans,  ;) ha ha ha and I would bet the line never stopped during production even if they discovered they had made an error....   ;D

I went Saturday (6 hr drive each way) and had a great time.  Everyone I talked to was friendly, down to earth, talked about Camaro's, their car, etc., etc..... super great folks!!! I made some new friends and met some I haven't seen in years... Some highlights I saw among the many;  a super rare documented 69 Z28 X11 code and a 69 L48 survivor car, .... so many beautiful Camaro's I filled the digital camera disc... The area is a very nice area and I sure hope to be back next year. Nothing but good things to say and a big thank you to all who worked hard to make it happen.

I knew it...  and this explains the asking price and why the owner would not disclose the VIN...

An old cheap trick song comes to mind... Walk away....  ohoh oh..... walk away.....    ;D

First if you already have some mechanical experience you wont have much trouble with getting into a Chevy. Tons of knowledge online, plus books and I suggest you read read read CRG.

IT all depends on what you want to do with the Camaro.  To me it sounds like you want a good driver but still a street machine... and frankly if your dad is my age and gets back into the car he'll want to burn some rubber at some point and for that you'll need those traction bars... so I would just clean them up and leave them on the car.  Going with the retro 60-70's street machine look isn't a bad idea and a lot less expensive too.  You can get a set of Cragars, or Ansons, or Rockets, or torque thrust mag wheels, F78's 15" or 14" tires and I they will fit within the wheel wells so the car sits normal without hitting the quarter lip.  If you do remove the traction bars you will need the stock plates and bolts for the switch. Check out RIcks Camaros or other vendors for these parts.  you 'll need to check out if there are air shocks or some other suspension part making the car sit different... if air shocks you can just reset the cars height by letting some air out.

If your engine is too radical for the street you'll need to pull it out and rebuild it with a milder cam, maybe less compression depending on what it has.. a 9:1 or 10:1 cr should still work with today's pump gas and still provide plenty of power.  The best thing to do is talk to a machine shop and get some answers... you will need to decide which way to go with the heads, etc.. it may just be easier and less cost to go into another motor like a crate engine... but it willl all depend on what you currently have.

You will need to figure out what you need for a carb and if what you have will work or if you need a more reasonable carb for the street.

Rear gears could also be a lot for the street if the car was built for the drags... a good gear ratio for street driving 3.31:1, up to 3.73:1 ratio but you'll need to check out what you have.  for example if you have like 4:56 gears you can still drive them on the street but if you want a better street-able gear you'll also need to change the carrier from a 4 to a 3 series..

You will also need to look at everything mechanical on a car that has been setting and make sure it all functions correctly.  You'll probably have to replace a lot of stuff just for safety, brakes, brake lines, gas tank, fuel lines, etc.... some mechanics will evaluate the car for you for a small fee...

Then there is the body... How much needs to be replaced, repaired , etc..  The more you can do the more you will save but if you have a basket case it may not be worth doing the car unless you got something rare.  but if you only need a some doors and new paint you are not to far gone..

So ...
1) assess the cars condition. 2) Estimate your repairs, costs and time.  multiply by 2.5 or more.  3) Be realistic and determine if it is feasible to get this car driving again.  Good luck and let us know what you find and decide.  JOE

Well actually I was just wanting the 1969 L78 Convertibles.  But the more I think on this the more it looks like I might need to just go ahead and collect the data  on all the L78's.. that will be a bear but for the same reasons probably well worth doing.  IF you want to send me your data info etc please feel free.  and thanks.  JOE

I need your help.

Please email if you have or know of a 1969 Convertible L78/L89 Camaro.   I have some data already on about 11 Convertibles thus far.

I own a 1969 12B X66 L78 Conv Camaro plus 2 1968 L78's Camaro coupes. It is Rallye Green code 79  A. I also have a friend who owns a 1969 L34 November Rallye green Camaro Conv in Canada, almost a twin to mine.  I think I remember reading somewhere that Gm was not keen to building these hi-perf. L78/L89 cars as Convertibles... maybe someone here at CRG can shed some light on this.

I started this registry to help certify and verify the 1969 convertible L78 Camaro's.  L78s or big blocks as a whole would be too much for now.  I believe there were far less L78 convertibles made than the 10% estimate... so I need and hope to substantiate that and this specific registry is one way that will help. So even if all you have is a window sticker or protect-o-plate, memory of, a wreck or junk, etc., etc... that information can be helpful data.

I want to help verify those who have real L78 cars with or without documentation, help with their history, etc... and also to help prevent the crooks from faking these cars...  I have been looking at L78's since 1976 when I use to race them... but now with so much information already out I am afraid to share any additional knowledge that would allow for a fake car to be made.. However, I really think this can be a real added bonus to the history of the Camaro and to CRG if we can all come together and build this knowledge stronger and document those surviving cars.

Looking forward to hearing from you and if you have knowledge of other L78 cars please let me know.  GI_ Joe   ;D ;D
