General Discussion / Re: inspection markings database
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:30:23 PM »
Thanks John,

I just keep seeing more paint marks that I have never seen in 50 yrs of looking at these cars!  It seems this conduct is polluting the GM history of what really happened.  I've been tracking the drive-shaft stripes and lately I am seeing many never before seen... now I'm seeing tie-rods with double or triple color inspection marks and rear axle housing x's, 4-10, codes, etc..etc..  makes me a little sick to think we are losing the history by these practices.  I hope someone somewhere is documenting some of them... unless I see the original untouched stripe I do not count it ...

General Discussion / inspection markings database
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:46:14 AM »
IS there a database of inspection markings?  Reason I ask is I continue to see so many restored cars with so many different markings I am thinking folks are putting on whatever they want to make it look factory correct...  I am an advocate for only reproducing what you find on your car as I know things changed from day to day and possibly car to car... but is anyone tracking the id and inspection marks?

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Rear axle tube codes and engine codes
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:18:33 AM »
I wonder if Jerry could have a legal bidding clause in the cert that requires the whole cert to be posted in order to prevent others from misusing the cert...probably not...just thinking though...

Even better would be to let us contact Jerry with the cert number and see the report or does he already do this???

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Warranty Engines
« on: August 24, 2011, 05:48:38 AM »
thanks to Fran and all for sharing the info... it is still a good read.

I have a CE 87xxxx block at the shop now.  It has T078 by the starter flange bottom part of the block.   From what I have been seeing on the CE blocks it appears that the first number, the year the engine was replaced or assembled in this case, as stated, is 8 for 1968 and I suspect the next number was a month code.  I have no proof of this other than looking at a hundred or more CE blocks. I also think the stamp numbers on the starter flange would be T = Tonawanda plant, 07= July and 8 = 1968 matching the pad CE stamp.  There are also inspector stamps on the block too.

If I understand this correctly, the year number, CE87xxxx in this case, does not represent the cars model year but rather the manufacturing year aka production year when the CE block/engine was replaced and or assembled.  In ccargo's example CE950332 on a 440 block dated G98 casting date Aug.09, 1968 for 1969 production got stamp T0808, again assembled Aug 1968 at Tonawanda and I agree was likely for a 67 or 68 car. but I think was replaced in May 1989. Also with Kurt's examples:

CE9B46015, CE9 = 1969, B= Feb and
CE0A965 0 9, CE0 = 1970 A = Jan
CEN72 502 = CE72 = either 1977, Feb or 1972 without a month,... Could the N be a engine code or for Norwood Camaro???

I might be completely wrong here but I hope my 2 cents of research helps.  I also suspect that the block casting number would be the block number you had until they ran out and then would be upgraded to the next better block but this is shear speculation.  Can anyone confirm any of this?   Thanks everyone, GI Joe

General Discussion / Re: Month and Week Coding
« on: August 24, 2011, 03:27:01 AM »
Eddie,

I can confirm this as I have never seen anything but 06A except 2 cars (06I and 06C) both fake but if you find one share the info as you never know. Also the 07A except an eBayer selling a car wrote his cowl as 07D but never posted a photo (if my memory serves me right) and it too was fishy...

Has anyone seen an 08 B (Aug 2nd week)???

unless you have a mostly original car and even if you do I would just keep looking... bound to find one eventually for reasonable money.

This recent past get rich fever of ever one restoring their so called original cars is the root of the whole problem for our hobby including parts and restoration businesses.  Most (99.8%) of these cars were at least street raced and beat hard and with so many restored cars out there being numbers correct matching or born with... not to mention all the fake tags, fake protect-o-plates, and fake paperwork, re-stamped blocks, re-stamped rears and re-stamped transmissions you really better be an expert on the Camaro or get an expert... even to verify a part...

IMHO the 480 looks original but the date code is not straight but that may still be original and the other one needs an expert eyes...

Back in the day the first thing many of us did was put on headers, take off the AIR system, replace the shifters, wheels, gears, etc,... all to go fast in a 1/4 mile!!!  With so much fake crap from the crooks out their it has really polluted our hobby and I hope it has not affected the Chevy history... Thank God we have CRG and many good guys in the car hobby...   ;D

General Discussion / Re: OK guys educate me.

Its great to see CRG members helping another Camaro driver out.   I have missed some of the posts on Missie's car and I assume it is a 68 Z28 without the original motor.

1) Has anyone verified this is a real 68 Z28?

2) How did they conclude or verify this?

3) I own a 04B 68 L78 and will gladly help when I can but I must know this is a real deal Z28...

4) I suggest the approach to this is to go see the engine, take multiple photos of the engine, close ups of the stamps, cast date, block number etc...  and post here for verification before any money changes hands.

5) and IMHO Jerry's Z28 books are a must have...

Good luck,   GI JOe

You may be able to find your VIN by going to the town/city, assessors or tax collectors property/motor vehicle tax records and the DMV should still have the info as well.  In CT the towns taxed the motor vehicles and the Lic plate and VIN was part of that data. (However a new CT law is allowing the towns to destroy the long kept records that required no additional maintenance costs but some not very bright CT officials thought the records not worth keeping, probably the same idiots who thought the revolutionary war records should be thrown out too.  and yes they did that losing an extremely important part of our states and country's national history...)

Since you know the towns you lived in at the time you owned the car you will know where to start to investigate.  Most records are public records and asking nicely always helps.  Good luck and let us know if you find the VIN...

Restoration / Leaf springs - need advice
« on: August 01, 2011, 05:30:08 AM »
Can anyone advise me on rebuilding my multi-leaf springs?  How do I tell if they are worn out or still good? What aftermarket springs have seen good reviews?  Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Restoration / Muncie rebuild - need info for which MFG to go with
« on: August 01, 2011, 05:25:49 AM »
Can any of my Camaro Brothers and or sisters tell me the good, the bad and the ugly of their experiences with the Muncie rebuilds kits, after market gears, bearings, etc.???  I have rebuilt them in the past when a whole lot of GM stuff was still easily available.  Now I do not know.  I see that gears are made in Italy, and somewhere else and I just want to do it right the first time. So any advice you can suggest is greatly appreciated.  Thanks much.

General Discussion / Re: Z28 on eBay...Real, Correct ?
« on: August 01, 2011, 05:16:51 AM »
You could spend half that money and get a real numbers matching Z28...  and just as nice.  I totally agree with Mark C.  There is a lot wrong with this car and for that price it better be perfect. It sure is pretty though....

FYI- in case you didn't know, You can check eBay Camaro sales to see what has been selling by selecting advance search, 1969 Camaro, checking the past listings box.
If everything looks correct and checks out, passes the crg review, I would also have someone like Jerry check the car before any money exchange.  Hope that helps.

General Discussion / Re: 1968 LA L78 car - real or not?
« on: July 27, 2011, 03:31:10 AM »
Thanks guys...  and sorry for the bad links...  I must be getting better as the L78 LA car made me question it...

What should the car be selling for considering its a clone?  I'm sure not 40K and would guess as nice as it looks maybe around 20K...
