Gary,

The chrome strip on the lenses was found on cars with the Z21 (Style Trim Group) or the Z22 option (Rally Sport, which included the Z21 option) and wasn't associated with the SS option.

There were 102,740 cars built in 1969 with the Z21 option group and 37,773 cars with the Z22 Rally Sport option.

Only SS cars with one of the two above options would have the strip.

Ed

Ed,

This brings up a good point.  Has the CRG ever pictorally documented the Z21 & Z22 options respectively?  It would be nice to see the style trim group
particulars as it pertained to striping, chrome highlights, etc.. Same for the RS package.

Gary,

If you are referring to the entire rear panel being painted black, that denotted SS-396 only.

Gary,
Hard to say for sure.  Somewhere between 60% - 100% gloss.
It was used many times and has a petina.

Restoration / Re: Turbo 400 ID stamp color..a really obscure question
« on: January 01, 2007, 02:28:23 AM »
I have two original '69 THM400's.  One is from a big block Caprice and the other is the coveted CX - YEAH BABY!

Both ID tags are yellow.  The CX was from a February 1969 build L/78 Nova and the tag has a 69 stamped on it.
I don't have the other THM400 close by to investigate the date stamp for you.

Here is the CX tag:

Decoding/Numbers / 69 radiator code questions
« on: December 28, 2006, 04:34:41 PM »
Recently, on eBay I saw an original ( reported ) radiator for a 396-375hp manual transmission equipped Camaro.
This radiator went for close to $700.00 and I didn't bid because I had a question on the tag and the seller could
not answer it for me.  He claimed to be the original owner of this car.

Here's the tag in question:

So, he is what I'd like to know.  If this tag is for a 69 Camaro, why does it have a "68" code on it?
Could it possibly be an early build tag?  Did such a thing exist ( tag wise )?

Lastly, can anyone decode this tag for me?
What does the "IL" designate?
What does the "OO" designate?
What does the "68" designate?
What does the "ZD" designate?
What does the "R" designate?
What does the "3017837" designate?

Radiator codes are something I never followed too closely.  The final price for this auction
tells me that maybe this was the "real deal".

Thanks,
Steve

General Discussion / Need help/opinions regarding Endura front bumper
« on: December 17, 2006, 12:29:50 AM »
Hi all !

I am considering the addition of the endura front bumper to a 69 Camaro project and I'd like to solicit some input from those of you that either have endura bumper
Camaro's or added one to your particular car.

What I am most interested in is the reproductions out there.  Are they correct?  How well do they fit?  Can you tell a repro from an original?  I want it to look like an
original option, not added later.  Accordingly, if the repro's either don't look, or fit as originals did, should I just look for an original setup?

Lastly, I've seen a number of split or separated original endura bumpers on eBay.  Can they be fixed?  Who can do that level of work?   Again, the key here is that I
want this to look like an original, restored bumper.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I have other photos of that car and know the story behind it.

It is the Styling mock-up car shown at the kick-off dinner. It also had black rockers.

Willaim,

Care to post any more of those images?  I'd like to see the blacked-out rockers.

Originality / Re: How do members stand on dealer installed undercoating?

Phil,

I can't help you there.  My undercoating in all wheel wells was freshened up at restoration time.  I never touched the underside of the car though.

I'm sure John's car is a treasure trove for this kind of information though.

Originality / Re: ENGINE OVERSPRAY ON ALUM INTAKES
« on: November 21, 2006, 03:29:18 AM »
Yes, some minor overspray is normal on all four edges of the intake and on the bypass hose, fitting and clamps, all of which were in place when the engine was painted; a vacuum-formed plastic mask was used during painting, but it wasn't always a perfect fit around the edges.

John,

Interestingly enough, my research into the intake vac-forms seemed to show that as they aged ( painted over & over again ), they actually started to
rool back on the edges.  That might explain why some engines have more overspray than others.  At some point in the process, the vac-forms were
simply replaced.  I'd love to see a picture of this process or find an original vac-form some day.

It was also sprayed in the front wheel wells. :)

John!

I was wondering when you'd chime in.  Since your '69 Z has undercoating on it, how do you stand on this issue?

Originality / How do members stand on dealer installed undercoating?
« on: November 05, 2006, 01:01:56 AM »
Hi all !

Originally, our 1st generation Camaro's came from the factory without undercoating.  My particular 69 Camaro has dealer installed undercoating and I have been
toiling with what to do about that.  Should I leave in on ( it would need to be frenhened-up a bit ) or strip it?  Recently, I was encouraged to see a post here
featuring a members car that appeared to have undercoating.  I believe it was JohnZ's 69 Z/28 that had dealer installed undercoating still intact.

From a purist's point of view, the undercoating should go.  But, as a survivor, should I leave the undercoating intact?  What do you all think about this?

Maintenance / Re: broken rocker arm
« on: November 04, 2006, 11:03:54 PM »
Just a suggestion for you.  A full rebuild in my book would entail new rocker arm assemblies as well.

BTW, if the rocker arm slot was not long enough, more than just one would have broken.  Some
day, someone is going to develop a see through valve cover for engine break-in so we can watch for
things like this.

I'm toying with opening up a top window in a set of big block valve covers and placing in a cap so I
can remove it from time to time during the run-in phase every time I build a big block......... :D
