General Discussion / Re: Dealership License Plate Frames
« on: May 14, 2008, 04:06:14 PM »
I am trying to find original license plate frames from Fred Gledhill Chevrolet, circa 1960's, that was located in Wilmington, Calif.  I currently own an original 1969 Z/28 that was purchased from there in Feb., 1969 and would like to add the dealership frames to add to it's originality.  Thank you.

If you find a good source for frames (lot of plate collectors - not so many frame collectors) I'd be interested in an contact.  I have been trying for the last 4 1/2 years to locate dealer plates for a couple of cars (admittedly, I have not been searching continuously but in spurts).

The usual suggestions are swap meets and Ebay...I've found both of those to be sources that are very dry for this sort of thing

Restoration / Re: Looking for an 1100843 61 amp alternator
« on: May 13, 2008, 03:09:26 AM »
from what I have been told -
The date would be possible if it was before the motor assembly date - though I have also learned that it was installed after the motor was mounted

The alternator is definitely installed on the assembly line - JohnZ confirmed this - so the car is a 01D and the engine is a 0117 so the date of 0122 on the alternator would seem to put it within range (john suggested about a week prior minimum).  The VIN is 520152 which is less than 100 cars away form the ending VIN for that month at LA.  So I'm think that the car had to have been built he last day or so of the month and that would make the alternator 8-9 days ahead of the car...anyone disagree?

I hate to jump on a piece which will need significant refurbing and then have it not really "fit" the puzzle - ya now?

Just another data point for you.  I have the original 37A alternator in my 69RS.  Car was assembled at Norwood around 20-21 Jan 1969.  Date code on the alternator is Jan 7, 1969.

Most alternators and distributors I've noticed seem to be within a month of engine assembly if not within 2 weeks.  Not sure how the judging rules apply - assume that they do allow for more of a range of acceptable dates.
Thanks for the data point.  Based on some responses in another thread I went with an October 24th distributor...that would seem to fly.  I am still looking for an alternator

The distributor should be at least a week prior to the engine assembly date (it was installed at the engine plant), and the alternator should be at least a week prior to the car's final assembly date (it was installed on the engine dress line at the car assemby plant).

that makes sense...how far back would you think its reasonable?  Same as for NCRS - up to  6 mos?

I have a 489 dated about the same as James'. Came out of a 12C car. :)
Well that sort answers the question I just posed about dating in a new thread. :o

I had a line on a Nov 30th dated one but it did not pan out...I have access to an October 24th dated one...based on what you just said that would seem fine.

So it turns out I am missing two pieces that I thought I had, A 61 AMP Alternator and a distributor.  This is for an LA built '69 SS 350 AT w/AC with a trim tag date of 01D and an engine build date of T0117HB.

How far ahead of the car and the engine should these two components be?

Can I use the NCRS guideline of six months prior to build date for these?

KurtS, this would seem to be a good one for you. :)

Thanks

The one I have is very early... August 68, if you are interested let me know.

that's pretty early for me..the motor is built January 17, 1969...I don't know if it will fly (what's the point in getting a correctly coded distributor only to have the dates be in error - ya know?)  I will keep you in mind.

And thanks for the reply.
