Decoding/Numbers / 1111480 Distributor Stamp
« on: October 04, 2016, 09:30:24 AM »
OK here goes:
With all the recent threads here and on similar forums about restamped engine parts, I have begun doubting things I was previously comfortable with.
Therefore I welcome opinions - hopefully favorable  ::) - on my car's distributor, pictured below.
Thanks to all

Back in 2008 the car apparently had V1219DZ on the block:

Doc how do you know it's original to the car?

Restoration / Re: Distributor Vacuum Tube Holder

Buzz if you mean the small clip that attaches to the intake manifold and holds the vacuum advance hard line, mine appears to have been black, or possibly a dark phosphate finish, originally. However, I'd be interested in other's responses because I believe that this was for engines that had aluminum intakes, and on iron intakes, the same clip may have been painted orange.

Mike, you probably already know about Don Lightfoot's excellent reproductions, but he offers them in self-adhesive or 'apply your own glue' versions - might give more opportunity to ensure good coverage along the edges:

Originality / Re: 4939899 fan clutch????
« on: September 25, 2016, 12:01:57 AM »
Joe I meant to follow up on this earlier. The '69 AIM calls up 4939899 under RPO K02. Sheet A1 lists the clutch numbers and descriptions as follows:

3937780 CLUTCH ASM "327" ENG
3937782 OPT
4939899 OPT
3946049 "350", "396" ENG
So that appears to indicate that 4939899 would not be for the 327, 350 or 396 engines, although the 2 other 'OPT' versions may be related to another RPO?
Also there is a note '6' against 4939899 on the AIM, but my copy has poor print definition in the revision history, and I can't make out what note 6 says.

The fan is also shown on K02/A2 and there are 2 listed:
3947772 BLADE ASM-FAN
3956684 OPT ("327", "350" ENG ONLY)
So if your fan and clutch were originally together, that also appears to indicate they weren't on a 327 or 350.

No worries. I haven't used repro door shells, so can't comment. Are your shells rusty, or just need re-skinning? I'd take an original GM door that needs work over a repro door every time, but that's just my preference - your budget may dictate which way you need to go.
What part of Aus are you in?

Restoration / Re: Cracked original windshield ... where to get replacement?
« on: September 14, 2016, 09:58:47 AM »
Question of personal preference; I always aim to replace any missing parts on my cars with nice used GM originals, but if I have no choice but to use a repro part, would not choose to pay extra to add a date code or part number that attempts to mimic an original.
Surprised at the reaction about this opinion, if it was a distributor or alternator that someone offered to put the original numbers on for you, there'd be an outcry.

If they charge extra to re-stamp (sorry, re-etch) then personally I'd leave the date code off, not worth trying to pass it off as the original.

Have used both those to ship parts down here, plus Heartbeat City (HBC), D&R, NPD, Firewheel Classics and more. HBC in particular has good parts, although a little pricey, but they do offer 'Made in USA' quality parts as well as the cheaper Taiwan/ROC repros. I've generally found parts made by CHQ to be very nice.
There used to be rumours that some vendors sent previously-returned parts overseas to get rid of them out of stock, knowing nobody would pay for returns outside of North America, but I've bought thousands of $ of parts over the years and never experienced that issue.
Best to contact the vendor first with specific questions if you have particular expectations though, since quality, fit and finish do not always correlate well with price. Also watch out for the GST threshhold, as it can be cheaper to place several orders rather than one; also allows you to see how a vendor performs before placing another order.
