Decoding/Numbers / Re: Instrument Cluster from Late 69 Z/28 (11A)

Nice piece, especially the very late 6.5k-8k tach; center fuel gauge too - so the donor car didn't have U17.
How did you come across that, and knowing the VIN?

Norwood was building an average of 943 per day.
Probably not significant for estimating purposes, but JohnZ's assembly process article states Norwood production was 57 cars per hour, or 912 per day over 2 shifts.

That's probably what I will need to do. Mine are .930 & .900. Thanks for the input....Joe
That's a fair bit below factory minimum spec of 0.965" (http://www.teufert.net/misc/rotors.pdf). I'm in a similar situation, mine have some pitting which probably won't clean up when cut to minimum. Interested to follow this for a possible solution, even if it just means buying a complete 2-pc US made assembly.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Muncie metal trim tag identification

I looked into decoding these a while back, and it seemed the Muncie tag number was dependant on groups of diff ratios, as well as the Muncie type (M20,M21 and M22). Will have to dig out my notes on observations of original drivetrain cars and the AIM info.

That interior color usage chart covers multiple Chevrolet models from the 1969 MY, so some other models may have had a mixture of interior colors for various components. The first section just clarifies that any interior part that is to be black for any interior color code, should be Ditzler 9266. Otherwise, follow the color codes listed for all other non-black interiors.

Try this link, then scroll down to the bottom of the page for the same image I posted above, the quality of this one may be a little better:

Originality / Re: Service Engines (CE coded)
« on: November 09, 2016, 08:55:47 AM »
To me that makes no sense, unless the gang stamp was incorrectly loaded with an '8' instead of a '9'.
BTW with a pad stamp serial number in the 50000 range, that would make it a Tonawanda-machined block, so presumably (originally) a hydraulic-lifter engine?

General Discussion / Re: ZLP955 is a year older
« on: November 09, 2016, 08:44:19 AM »
Thanks everyone, what a surprise and an honor to get a mention. Definitely a year older, not so sure about the wiser...... although thanks to everyone here the education process is always ongoing and enjoyable.
And yes, the time zone difference can get confusing - especially when travelling across the international date line - but I like to think it means I get to celebrate over 2 days!

Sorry, don't have a bigger version of that image, that's straight from the automotive color reference section of www.tcpglobal.com
I'll see if I have any other sources of reference for interior color codes, pretty sure I have something else.

Hakan,
1. Yes, the upper (visible) section of the steering column should be green - also see Q3.
2. See interior color chart below for Midnight Green.
3. Here's the original factory dark blue dash on my car, you can see which parts of the plastic dash carrier are painted to match a non-black interior color - also note the steering column is painted. I can't find any pictures of the column after removal, so can't confirm the extent of color applied to the steering column below where it passes under the dash - but my recollection was that it wasn't dark blue all the way down.

Can't answer your question Jimmy, but if it turns out your switch needs a rebuild, here's a great tech procedure from Muscle Car Research: https://www.musclecarresearch.com/gm-3956727-rebuild

Ha! My long-suffering wife puts up with a lot more than an experiment on the counter. I had a pair of 186 heads on the bedroom floor for months (don't ask why) that caught their fair share of passing toes, then there was the time I used the dishwasher to degrease parts while she was in town, the next time it got used the dishes etc all came out greasy.... Then the powdercoating trial using the oven.....

Ah, all the technical process questions!

1. Take chipped 99cent supermarket ceramic mug.
2. Add 2 heaped teaspoons of Nescafé Blend 43 granules to 1/2 cup boiling Aussie rainwater.
3. Dozen stirs counter-clockwise using slightly tarnished teaspoon.
4. Leave to cool while doing yard work, then pour into small Zip-Lok bag.
5. Add one $8 repro check valve from John's Classic Cars and seal bag.
6. Check until happy with color and remove.
OR
6a. Wife asks what is that mess in the bag on the counter? and you remember the experiment, remove valve and wish you'd caught it sooner.

Any worries about the coffee effecting the rubber check valve? I assume you didn't seal the ends judging from no signs of the ends being blocked off.
Mike, I didn't want a color change on the valve, even if it would be hidden by the hoses, so I plugged both holes on the valve with some scrap rubber bungs as I wasn't sure if any moisture would affect the internals. IIRC from a previous thread, the valve just consists of a small spring and a rubber diaphragm though, doubt it would be ruined by a bit of coffee.
