Originality / Re: Original Born with Battery Trays LOS NOR
« on: January 21, 2017, 01:14:18 AM »
Is there a possibility that the trays with the less-defined stamping in the hold down clamp area could be from an alternate/standby supplier, rather than later service replacements? I doubt that there was a sole supplier to the assembly plants, and each one may have had subtle differences in the stamping details.
I have noted on several trays that they have a row of 'K's or possibly 'X's stamped on the 2 rectangular nuts used to bolt the tray down, but these trays also lack the tab detail that you've noted as indicating assembly-line versions.

Originality / Points Distributor Cap
« on: January 17, 2017, 12:32:31 PM »
Trying to determine if the distributor cap with my 1111480 is the correct type; it has 'Delco-Remy Patent Pending R' on the top, and is black with silver (aluminum?) contacts. I believe this makes it a 308R cap, since I'm reliably informed the 309 caps are brown with copper contacts.

My understanding is that cap markings changed as follows:
Late '50's until 1969 model year: marked 'Delco-Remy Patent Pending' (no 'R')
1969 model year until ?: marked 'Delco-Remy Patent Pending R'
? onwards: marked 'Delco-Remy Patent 2769047 R'

So my questions are, when did the patent number started showing up on the distributor caps, and is it correct that a 308 cap is black and a 309 cap brown?
Thanks for any help.

:) hmm pretty cool so they did serve a purpose
But are they correctly installed? Similar designs (like Caltracs, for example) all face forwards rather than rearwards, and seem to target the front spring eye area as a load path..... Hmmm.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Water Pump 3927170 date code

C-27-8 would be my call.
That's a long style water pump, so March 68 would be too early for that casting (also see Ed's earlier comment).

If the U46 parking lamps are there (provision in the housing for the cable) the possibility exists that it was original to the car
Thought I'd post a picture of one of my U46 parking light housings, in case anyone's interested in the fiber optic cable entry detail:

A "rear-facing" traction bar sounds aftermarket, or even home-made. Must be close to the fuel tank.

Yes, many of the usual vendors offer a reproduction, here's just one example:

Not sure if there was more than one style, nor if these are accurate.

Another awesome resource for rebuilding and adjusting your GM steering box is Jim Shea's technical papers: http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com

Seller said in the listing that he/she would refund any excess shipping costs once known, fairly common for sellers to err on the side of caution - easy to get stung, especially with ebay fees on shipping as well as item selling price.

X3! Very interested in the body tags/plates, also sounds like a U18 metric speedometer, unless converted locally in Japan from a standard MPH unit.

Not to hijack, but has anyone else seen the lower mounting bracket on the bumper guard apparently painted black? If so, what about the mounting hardware?

Often wondered why they used different colors, especially when the gauges are so hard to see when driving anyway.....

Originality / Re: Service Engines (CE coded)

I am not sure Tim. Probably Jan 69 Flint. (01 9 V). What the casting date?
J 12 8, October 12, 1968. Seems the block must have sat for some time before being machined.
I'll have to have another close look on the oil pan rail on my CE block to see if there's a similar number there to compare this one with.

The owner of the block with the CE9A24283 stamp above sent me some additional pictures shown below - thanks Kevin!
Still has the inspection and assembly marks on it, and looks to be a 302 based on the 1178 crank, pink 'O' rods, 2482 main caps and windage tray studs.

Does anyone know how to decode the numbers stamped near the gasket surface by the starter motor? I assume it's a date code of sorts, and that the 'V' denotes Flint engine assembly; however is it in the format month-year-plant, or day-month-plant? And is the plant code a suffix (rather than the usual pad stamp prefix), or is the stamp mirror reversed ('01 9 V' or 'V 9 10')?
What about the stamped out numbers underneath? Correction on the assembly date? Re-work?
