Title: 69 Copo front end too low
Post by: 1971ls6 on July 10, 2011, 07:27:53 PM
I bought the car with 2 inch drop spindles and 235/60/15 front tires and unknown new springs, I assume they are small block springs. The front end is too low and the inside of the tires rubs on turns against the tie rod ends. Will 14x7 steel wheels and f70/14 polyglas tires fix the problem?I think I need either regular spindles or big block springs? Hopefully not both. Can somebody give me part numbers of the springs? Or recommendations on which way to go

To get it correct you will need to return the suspension to stock or something close.
Spindles and Spring, check the upper and lower control arm bushings as well as the upper and lower ball joints. The bubble top upper ball joints are available and there are companies who will rivet them into the original arms.

If the car is a Double Copo, has the Sports Car Conversion (140 speedo, 15" wheels larger sway bar) as well as the 427 mill it would have the YH ralleys like a 69 Z28. If not it would have had 14" steel with a dog dish, or other optional wheels.

ls6,
The 235/60 /15 are tall and square. I don't like anything larger than 215/60 on a sotck looking car. If you have  mounted, smaller tires  that you can test fit to your car try that first. Why the dropped spindles with tall tires. .  . was it too low? I run a 68 BB with 1 coil chopped off factory springs with either BFG 215/60 on 15x7 ralleys, bfg 165/60 on 15 x 5 '67 ralleys with wheel well trim rings without a rub/scuff. I also run 15 x 7 original Torque thrust D's with BFG 205/60 that rub on the inside wheel well bolt heads on dips only.  My 2 cents.  Good luck.

If the tie rod ends rub the tires on turns, they're going to rub going down the road as well; nothing changes the dimensional relationship between the tire and the tie rod end. There's no way on earth that 235/60 tires are going to be rub-free vs. the inner fender lips with 2"-drop spindles, either. Get rid of the Bubba drop spindles and springs and put more reasonable profile tires on it.

No idea why the guy put 235/60s on the front with the drop spindles . I have a set of 215/70/15 radials that I can put on the front until I go with the 14 steel wheels with the polyglas and dog dish. Anybody tried this combo ?

What is the original back space of the 14x7 steel wheels? 4 or 4.25???
