Title: 69 Z28 coil bracket- Notched?
Post by: rally on January 09, 2011, 04:35:32 PM
Gentlemen,
I purchased a 69 Z28 Original ignition coil bracket which has the correct angle to clear the cowl induction air cleaner. My question is, does the coil bracket suppose to have a notch on the top side? My bracket is a soild piece without this notch. Do i have the correct one? According to one person on ebay who is selling one with the notch, this persons claims if this coil bracket isnt notched it can cause ignition problems. I never heard of this, was the notched bracket use on BB Cars only? I am under the impression that the 69 Z28 Coil Bracket wasnt notched, please help me out. Thank You.

There is no "69 Z/28 coil bracket."

Z/28s built with the standard hood [most] used the production coil & bracket assembly embossed '293'. Z/28s built with ZL-2 [and L48] used a coil assembly with the bracket from the '66-'67 275/327 embossed '270'; positions the coil at a greater angle from vertical to clear the larger ducted hood air cleaner. If you just bought the bracket you will have to find a '270' coil.

I know of no notch in either bracket or ignition problems.

Boy i am stumped here. You go on ebay and see these coil brackets for sale with no notch, and then some with it. And the ones that are for sale on ebay the sellers claim these solid brackets without the notch are the correct ones. Did Chevy use both of these coil brackets for the 69 Z28? Anybody have any other ideas. William i trust your judgement, but again what i see out there thats for sale just confuses me even more.

My original Z28/ZL2 car has no "notch" in the coil bracket; have no idea what they're talking about.

Rally... I have seen several variations of the coil bracket and no doubt some are repop.  I did find one unique that I had a pic of one time.  It would not stand straight up on a flat surface, as there was a notch out of the bottom  that allowed a more severe tilt to the coil bracket.  I found others with different degrees of inclination that were flat on the bottom (ie could stand up on a table and tilt backward)..... I will look for the pics. looked like this one..

Thanks John for setting me straight on this coil bracket. Unreal what these sellers advertise and say.

I'm not so sure you can say it's wrong.  Looks original enough (vintage) and as I have seen this bracket in the past with a 270 coil. Perhaps it has other applications IE vett or what have you... but it is definitely not a bracket from a re pro house.  no doubt your bracket does not have the notch, but like I said... I have seen this combination in the past.

Here's another one... note the pictures carefully and see that there is a step up from the bottom of the bracket as well as the notch on the bracket. The 'step up' allows a more severe angle for the bracket to be inclined.... will not sit flat on a flat surface... needs to be over the edge of a table to sit flat on the bracket bolts....
