If a dealer were to install an 8 track player #91BT411 underdash unit, and there is a console in the car, were would it be installed? what bracket would be used? In the AIM it looks like U57 is installed under the ashtray, but that wont work with a console.

Dealer would install it anywhere it would fit, he not the factory and would have to make do. Just pick a spot close to the console and screw it in. Won't be easy to reach from the drivers seat though no matter where it goes.

Based upon my car
it would have been installed under the radio and they would have cut the console for the unit to fit
-
Why wouldn't the dealer install the correct 8 track that mounted on the console in the first place
-
More profit on an aftermarket unit would be my first guess.
-
Chris,
Two questions:
1. Where did they cut it exactly?
2. How did they attach it.

Chris, Please include photos if possible

Why would a dealer cut the console in a brand new car to fit a unit that would bolt under the passenger side dash panel just fine. I know if i came to pick up my car and someone had hacked up my console the dealer would be putting a new one back in the car. The dealer would probably install a motorola, or other aftermarket unit under the dash as close to the console as he could get.
If its not factory you don't have to worry about the "correct" way to install it, because there isn't one. Dealer installed equipment is no differenat that previous owner installed hardware. Get it as close as you can and go for it.

directly under the radio - The radio is the AM/FM (not stereo)

Let's say the dealer put the 8-track on the other side of the console - and now you have to reach over to change tracks while driving- not liikely
The 8- track was big- if you moved it over any closer to the wheel it would have gotten in the way of the gas pedal - the reason the factory decided it went to the rear of the console - when factory installed

Chris,
Two questions:
1. Where did they cut it exactly? - see pic
2. How did they attach it. - the two screw holes under the radio held with some sort of bracket that the 8-track bolted to - I believe that determined the location and size of the cut in the console
