I thought I was finding the original engine to my friend's '74 Z/28 today, but it turned out to be a '69 DZ engine. I looked over the engine quickly to find that it looks good overall. It's been bored .030 over, has correct '69 Z TRW pistons, and a 400 cubic inch crankshaft. The production code is V0519DZ and looks like a legit stamp to me. I'll post photos later. The engine casting # is 3970010 and the casting date is 5-13-9. I hope to re-unite this engine with the original car.

If it has a 400 crank, it doesn't likely have correct 69 Z pistons. Would have had to use a REALLY short rod to get things where they belong.
Because you posted the partial vin, assuming it is stamped on the rough area down by the oil filter. Is that correct?
Pics would help.

You are correct, the pistons aren't correct 69 Z pistons. And, yes the partial VIN is stamped on the rough cast area near the oil filter.
I tried to add some photos to this post but for some reason couldn't get it done.
The good news is though, after doing some decent detective work I was able to find the present owners of the '69 Z/28 this engine was born with. And, as of Jan 15th it is in their hands...with ultimate plans to put it back in the car.
To say that the couple who currently owns the car were over-joyed to have their original engine would be a gross understatement :-)

Very nice result. Love to see success stories.
