One round trip from San Diego to Pomona to the radio guys shop. He came recommended and was really nice. We had already traded emails and talked. Here’s the story…my 68 has a factory AM/FM. I pulled it out in 1989 or so because the light bulb blew out. Changed it out, 2 weeks later the radio quits, so I put in the ol’ Sparkomatic with the 5 band equalizer /power booster. Pull Sparky out during restoration and put in non functional radio.
Now at the radio guys shop and told him I don’t have a front speaker. The original front speaker got tossed forever ago and now I new to source a front core somehow (found a convertible rear already). He walks over to a plastic bin, pulls it down and says “take your pick” while he answered all my questions about fitment, date codes, etc. We tested my fader control -Tis good to go. So I get reconed OEM front (with the mount bracket) and rear speaker, fader installed, a “I’m replacing all these parts that fail over time” and showed me an example, cleaning, lubing, tuning, etc. In about a month it’ll be done. He even showed my Bluetooth piece that can connect to the FM frequency. Factory radio -no extra cables! Stay tuned.

I've used these people before the name change. Very helpful. Provided them with cores for their inventory. http://www.woodradios.com/index.htm

Sauron, I saw their ad, and their stuff looks good. But I decided a direct hand off to Joe and zero chance for any shipping company to destroy or lose it was worth the time. Gas money is a push as well. Also, I was repeatedly reminded again how much I would never want to live in or near LA. I’ll post a follow up when I get it back.

I know the feeling. Left in 86 and never thought about returning.

For Radio Restorations I only use: Suburban Radio. Mike is extremely knowledgeable and fair. Second time I’m using him for my 1966 Impala SS Multiplex Stereo. Very similar to the Multiplex stereo used in the 1968 Camaro. I was referred to him by Donny Bock years ago: http://suburbanradio.com/ Paul.

I've had JV restore 2 radios - an AM for the Chevelle and an AM/FM Mono for the Z. Very pleased with the quality of the restoration work:

I have the Multiplex in my '68. In the mid 70's when I was a teenager I worked at a Pontiac dealership in Charlotte, NC and the dealerships used a place called Downtown Radio. My Multiplex quit working around '88 or '89 and I remembered Downtown so took it to them and they repotted it (at least that's what I think they said). That was so long ago now I wonder if anyone from that era is still working.

^ ReCapped^
Short hand for Replace Capacitors,
Often Capacitors "Dry" out changing the X of C Reactance altering circuits properties and making a Mess of things physically (Leaking) & Electrical performance to failures.

So after said trip to Classic Industries on Saturday to return some unused leftover project parts and pick up some new parts (radio harness/tuner knobs/etc), then headed east to see Joe and pickup my repaired radio. He was very thoughtful and thorough in explaining everything again and we bench tested everything. He even showed me the Bluetooth device for a specific FM frequency. Plug it in the cigarette lighter and now you have GPS/XM or hands free talking on the old 68. For1967 technology, it was pretty loud. Anyway, the fader worked as we knew and he guaranteed his work for 2 years. Super nice guy who didn’t attempt to upswell my anything. He just asked what I wanted in the end-which was I wanted it work like new. Then he cutout cardboard protective covers for the speakers and bubble wrapped them so they don’t get damaged during transit home. Next is the install. Cost-a few hundred less than what others wanted for a lot more parts. His link below. Tell him David from San Diego sent you.
