Title: drivers side wheel lock up
Post by: DAVID CHAMBERS on March 17, 2021, 12:02:44 AM
I have a drivers side wheel that locks up when it get's hot. I can pull out of the garage fine and goes for 2-3 miles and locks. I can even just pull out of the garage fine and let it idle for 10 mins. and it locks up trying to pull back in. 1969 SS 350 newly restored. Can you help?

You have a bad flexable brake line. When they get old, they swell inside and keep the fluid from returning to the master cylinder.

If you haven't replaced your rubber brake lines in more than 5 years, do it.

Thanks but all the brake system is brand new. Just got it back from the shop that replaced all the brake and exhaust systems and new paint. I double checked the flex line and it is new.
Could it be clogged?

Front or Back? Disc or Drum?

Does it lock up by itself or when you apply the brake? What do you do to release it or will it eventually release on its own? Could be either mechanical or hydraulic issue. Broken spring or pad retainer.

Back drum and it does release itself when it cools. I can't get the drum off to check inside. Tried to turn the star adjuster but no luck. I was told if the brakes sat a while before paint was done maybe the pads absorbed moisture and swelled.

No its most likely the wheel cylinder not releasing and the piston inside locking in place. It either needs rebuilt, was rebuilt incorrectly or the piston is damaged. just change it out.

Did they replace rear brakes during rebuild?  The drums should come off.  Might need a bigger hammer....I agree with USA1, wheel cylinder is sticking.  Id replace both sides.  Good luck.

Drum may not come off because it's over adjusted. You'll need to go into the slot in the backing plate and push the self adjuster off the star wheel to back off the brake.
