This thread will feature material put out by Chevrolet and/or Chevrolet dealers promoting the fact that the white with twin orange stripes 1969 Camaro RS/SS convertible Z11 was chosen as the pace car for the 53rd running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana on Friday, May 30, 1969.
Multiple different color advertisements were produced showcasing the Camaro pace car. A two-page spread appeared in both the 1969 Indianapolis '500' Festival Souvenir Program as well as the Official Souvenir Program for the 1969 Indianapolis 500 race.

I will add more as I come across them. Please post anything you have that I haven't posted. Thanks!

That Wegner dealership picture is one of the first times I've seen the door decal on a car that wasn't at Indy or a GM promo picture.
I wonder if it was an Indy car after the event. The dealership is in VA. There's another VA dealer who had a car go to Indy and then get returned to them.
Goodyear on that car, Uniroyal on the Meadors car.
Thanks!

Your welcome Kurt. Here are a few more photos showing Z11's inside dealerships with the door decals applied. It looks like both photos show that the decal was applied on top of the stripe. It also appears that the cursive "Chevrolet Camaro" is applied closer to the door handle in the second photo. The "Ch" is definately under the mirror in the first photo.
1) Unknown dealership, but back of photo stated May 14, 1969 (worthpoint)
2) Cleveland County, North Carolina Dealer (Uniroyal Tiger Paw F70-14 tires) Title: "Cleveland County, North Carolina, 4-H Club automotive program members inspecting a Chevrolet Camaro, "Official Pace Car, 53rd Annual Indianapolis 500 Mile Race..."" I had been looking for an image of this Sprite display and finally found one on Flickr. It appeared in a display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in 2019 honoring the 50th anniversary of Mario Andretti's Indy 500 win. I go to Pole Day every year but was not able to see this display last year so it was cool to see the pictures that "Greg2600" posted: https://www.flickr.com/photos/greg2600/albums/72157708926031386/page1

Great posts, as always. Thank you!

Thanks Tim!
I finally found the image I had of the Sprite ad. Notice that it is different from the one I posted above. (ebay)

Here is a 1969 yearbook ad for Wade-Walsh Chevrolet, Inc. featuring a 1969 Z11. It looks to be wearing Uniroyal tires.

Found this advertisement for McMahan Chevrolet in Lafayette, Colorado featuring a 1969 Camaro RS/SS Z11 convertible in the April 24, 1969 edition of the Broomfield Star newspaper here: https://www.coloradohistoricnewspapers.org/?a=d&d=BMS19690424-01.2.22.2&srpos=17&e=--1969---1969--en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxCO%7ctxTA-camaro-------0------
Notice that in referring to the "Indy 500 Pace Car Camaro" in the picture, the caption on the left states, "We have sold this one, but we have many more exciting Camaros in stock." Since the newspaper is dated, April 24th they sold the car more than a month before the actual running of the Indy 500.
-
The cars were available for sale before the race. But they generally didn't fly off the showroom floor. They were expensive - many sat months, some for a year. I know of about 10 cars that were sold in 1970 CY.

Thanks for the info Kurt.

I have been able to amass a treasure trove of first generation Camaro material by taking advantage of the week long free trial at newspapers.com. Here are some of the promotional ads for the 1969 Camaro RS/SS Z11 convertible Indy 500 Pace Car that I was able to find. The first one is a national Chevrolet advertisement while the rest were run by regional Chevrolet dealerships. I am posting them in chronological order as they were run.
I found most of what I will post at newspapers.com but I will identify the other digital newspaper repositories where applicable. To identify the particular newspaper, date they were published and where they were each located simply consult the file name under the image.
Enjoy!

Not sure how there could be "only 16 left" on July 12th when on June 29th there were "only 5 left." Possible misprint or did they get more pace cars?

Here are a couple of pictures of a 1969 Camaro RS/SS Z11 convertible inside the dealership showroom of Stiver Chevrolet Oldsmobile in Hubbard Ohio. They were recently posted by Marc Briel on the Old Dealership Pictures Facebook page. He mentioned that it is actually the car he currently owns in the pictures. How cool is that!
