Title: Strange vin number on engine to date numbers .
Post by: Mr12771 on March 21, 2007, 08:18:14 PM
I just bought this motor and something just doesn't seem right to me. The casting date is I 29 6 the front stamping is V1011MT but the vin stamping is 7N183876. From what I found online that vin should be around Feb 1967. Four months apart, could that be right? I can take a picture and send it if you would like.

Mike,

Although it's outside the "normal" range, it's still within the "accepted" range so it's possible. Can you take a picture and post it? We'd like to have a look.

Here is the picture. I hope it works. Also is this vin in the database?

Ed;

Was it acceptable to use the letter "I" for the number one (1)?

Yes - the "I" character was used much more often than the "1" character in the engine plant stamp.

I had a very similar question regarding a block I purchased. See the post on this forum entitled "Do these 302 DZ Block Numbers make Sense?". After some discussion, it was determined that the block is "the real deal", although I never figured out why there was a 4 month difference between the casting date and the assembly date. It would probably help to post a picture of the casting number and casting date for the experts  to help.

Best of luck,

JmcBeth
