Dear Sirs, Please can you clarify whether there should be a rubber gasket between the carburettor and the air cleaner on my 1968 L48 350CI Camaro RS/SS. The car has Rochester quadrajet and original aircleaner. Many thanks as always, Nigel

Yes and it is a thick paper gasket and are still available from parts stores.
I believe all engines used it from the 6 cylinder to the L78.

Depending on the manifold, make sure and read the following thread (other similar discussions over the years):

You'll need a SS "protection" gasket if your manifold has a "hot slot" in it. If you've already plugged ports, or someone else has, you use the fiber or sandwhich gasket.

Thanks for the responses.
I am not a mechanic so I apologise for the questions but you mentioned the intake manifold however the gasket I am after sits between the carburettor and the air cleaner.
The manifold I have is a standard cast iron manifold with oil fill.
Thanks you again in advance. Nigel

Everything I ever worked on that had a carb had a thick paper gasket between the air cleaner housing & the carb to keep dirt out of the carb/engine......Joe

Got it. A little overboard in my first response (I had the situation of the hot slot in mind because of issues with my Quad equipped L48). Answer is a definite yes for the air cleaner-to-carb gasket, I always have had a handful of them in the garage stock.

Many thanks to all who responded, I really appreciate it. Best regards, Nigel

I think it was around mid-model year 67 the gasket was added. I believe indicated under UPC K19 or 24 in the AIM.

Often I find it is either missing or sometimes heat-welded to the bottom flange of the air cleaner housing, so you may it is missing but its not.
But as stated available over the counter. Cheap too.

I think my car had a carb/ac gasket cut from a piece of corrugated cardboard on it when I bought it in 1976... I'm pretty sure the same 'gasket' is still on it today.. :)

imho they also often get blown off and lost when doing tune-up stuff with the air cleaner off and revving motor.
Old notes on-hand say the 5-1/8" Air Cleaner Gasket is Fel Pro # 60038 and maybe # 13-6516

FWIW The original factory gasket is a natural or tan color the reproductions/what is currently available is black or dk gray. - I had a point deducted for the wrong color at he NCRS national show.
