Title: black 69 RS/SS Caveat Emptor?
Post by: BULLITT65 on March 20, 2018, 06:54:23 PM
So I saw this 69 Camaro on ebay, and it has been generating a lot of interest. I wasn't sure if I should piggy back onto a previous thread or not, so I started a new one.
Here is the ebay listing:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-Chevrolet-Camaro-Red-Deluxe-Custom-Weave/302671384477?hash=item46789ecf9d:g:aAYAAOSwLahapzEf&vxp=mtr

It shows a late 69 (08A) Camaro SS with a trim tag showing 10. Maybe Kurt and William have seen enough of these were it is no big deal. I don't see that many late in the year with a factory black paint job, and would like some more insight. Have black cars been documented this late in the year?

Note *The trim tag doesn't look right to me, when I compare it to others I have on file

(VIN # is not listed in the auction)

Not a good pic but I see enough to consider the tag a repro.

Thanks. What is the latest (10) car you have seen?

Black was an extra-cost option as of January, 1969 and continued through the end of production. Our db has black cars built the last week of production.

Initial '69 Camaro dealer ordering info listed black as an RPO color. It dropped off the option list shortly afterwards. There are a few early production black cars at both plants, paint code 10.

I'm learning about tags also, I think something is funny about that tag too. Once you see it, it throws the whole car into question.
Other than the tag(possible) issue, nice car.

I have emailed the seller. FWIW -he says he has no clue if the car is numbers matching  or how correct the car is.

In my experience, the '69 Camaro is on a lot of bucket lists. Guys in the market for one sometimes do due diligence and gain some knowledge; mostly not. There's a lot to learn-over the production run Z/28s were built with 3 different  tachometers, 4 different exhaust systems, different wheels. There were other subtle, undocumented changes over the model year. Options were added, others discontinued. I'm coming up on 43 years of experience with them and still learning.

Entirely possible he bought the car because he always wanted one and liked it. He may in fact know little about it. Over the years, I have met two original owners and I doubt either could tell you much about their cars.

For those in the market, first do some research. As seen here, there are reproduction body tags, reproduction paper work. Very easy to be fooled into buying a car that was misrepresented. Often, the seller is not aware.

I could see it in my shop. A period correct L78, hookers, flowmasters, maybe tripower, and the factory air. But not at that price.
