Title: What the heck is this?
Post by: 69Z28 on October 07, 2013, 07:32:28 PM
Another oddball piece that someone thinks belongs on a 69 Camaro...or does it?

Gary, I have no idea what that "shield" fits. I have never seen one on a '69 Camaro although anything is possible. I have a factory solenoid heat shield on my '94 Blazer but it does not look like that. It may one of those, " Well it came off of a Camaro." deals.

I have an idea they may have been fitted to big block cars..... Will have to go and check the AIM.

That's an auto transmission linkage shield.  I just installed a similar one on a 67 with a powerglide this past weekend.  Gets bolted up along with the bottom flexplate inspection cover on the driver's side.  They may vary a little for T400, between years, etc. See UPC M35/M38/M40 in an AIM for starters  Most got thrown away by backyard mechanics.  Not sure if they're repopped, took me a long time to find the correct one in good condition.

  I don't think '67 TH400's used that.

Was it strictly Camaro only?

Was it strictly Camaro only?

No - other carlines used it too - it was to prevent snowpack/slushpack from jamming up the Powerglide lower kickdown linkage rod and holding the throttle open.

No, I've seen them on eBay for Impala, Nova, etc.  I think the full size shield was slightly different, not sure about others.

They are shown in the AIM on UPC M35 Sheet A19 for 67, Sheet A20 for 68 and 69.  Don't see them shown under M38 or M40.

If I remember correctly, That shield was used only on the early powerglides that had manual kickdown linkages (as per John Z). Not sure if they still used the powerglide with manual linkage rods, etc.. in the '69 model year, would refer to the AIM.  My '67 Camaro with PG has that same shield, FWIW

So, if I went to look at the linkage on my survivor 69 Impala LM1 with power glide, that shield should be there?

Yes, it should. For the '69 Camaro, it's shown in section M35, sheet A20 in the A.I.M. All Powerglides had the mechanical rod kickdown linkage.

I hava this on my 69 Pace Car with powerglide.  It fits powerglide only and acts as a shield for the kickdown linkage, which is not a cable like in the TH350, but a set of linkages.  I don't believe you will find this on the TH350 or TH400 cars.
