I have a number of used '69 wiper motor assemblies and some have the part number 5045572 stamped on the end of the motor casing, and some have it on a silver foil sticker/label; the casing end just has Type E 12V on those with the label. The foil stickers are from later 69 production, judging by the julian date code on the stickers I have. The stamped casings don't appear to have a date code.
Would it be correct to think that motor assemblies changed over at some point from earlier motors having the assembly part number stamped, to later motors having it printed on a foil sticker, and if so, at what point in 69 production did the change occur? Was there a difference too between NOR and LOS/VN produced cars?
-
I can only provide one data point for a data base.
My original 09C (*Sept 17, 1969) Z28 / RS has the silver pn sticker and date code on the wiper motor.
photo is attached. Sticker PN: 5045605, also has '227 9 6 A' printed on it.
'227 9 ' might be the Julian date and year (15 Aug '69), which would correspond well to my mid Sept built car, but that's just a guess on my part.
If you begin a data collection on this, I'd suggest collecting the car build date, RS or not, PN on the sticker, along with the other data, and maybe we can begin to make sense of the information? eg.
Car build date RS? sticker PN? Stamped PN? Other codes

Thanks Gary,
Yes, the date code (as I understand it) is:
Assembly Part #
Julian Date (Day)__Year__Factory Line__Shift Code
So in your case, the part # is for an RS wiper assembly * (mine, 5045572, is standard assembly for non-RS car).
Assembled 227th Day of 1969 on line # 6, 'A' shift (Day).
Just trying to determine if there was a changeover date, with a view to putting the correct one on my 04A car.
* (Before someone mentions it, I believe that a non-RS car could have had the #605 assembly if it had the headlamp washer option, but that was rare).

Perhaps we can start off some data point collection, following on from Gary's chart?
If we can add the sticker details here, it may start to indicate a date range for sticker use....
Gary - I also added in column for final assembly plant.

Gary,
You might add another field to the features poll - I have a RS/5605 that it stamped, foil tagged and has a very faint yellow ink/paint stamp with the part number on the side of the case. Only one like it I have ever seen - I have 4 or 5 of them, but this is the only one with an original enough finish to show the rubber stamped part number. I'll try to get a pic of it during day light so it will show up -
Regards,
Steve

Steve,
Add your data to the listing for all your motors, and add the additional column. easier now than when the list is larger *G*

Steve, it would be great if you can add your details to the list above; since your wiper motor has both a stamp and a sticker, it may be from around the time of the changeover - i.e. using up stocks of stamped casings at the same time the stickers were being added once the motors were assembled.
Cheers, Tim

Updating the Windshield Wiper Motor data list with CROB's info.. since he didn't do it himself.. :)

Steve, are you sure that wiper motor is original to the car, as a julian date of 079 and an 01D trim tag build date don't align? If the julian date on the motor assembly is model year, not calendar year, that doesn't seem to match well with the other data so far.....
The 'B F' at the end of the sticker throw the previous theory of factory line number and shift code a curve ball too....
Anyone have some ideas ???

Sign of over maturity - the inability to proof read posts. Never seen a Pace Car built in January ? I haven't either - in my struggle to copy and paste the table, I entered the wrong date code twice. It is an 03D car, my X77 in an 01C: somehow I married the two. I'll have to dig out the X77's motor - if I remember correctly (again, tough at my advanced age), it is a stamped car, no tag. We'll see -
Thanks for catching me sleeping -

Ok thanks to everyone who provided data so far, and to Gary for keeping the table going; it looks like the stickers were around for mid-production timeframe, at least on NOR cars. 03D with a sticker date of 079 is the earliest so far.
Hopefully we can add to this as time goes on, and maybe even get some more LOS data too.

That's interesting... first one we've had reported that didn't adhere to a consistent pattern, but yours is also the 'earliest' one reported to date. We need some more early '69 RS WS wiper motor numbers to be reported to see when that PN might have changed.. Did you notice any other inconsistencies or differences with your unit over later units?
-
I honestly never gave much attention to the wiper motor setup at all. So I cant offer any more info. on that. It appears to be the original unit but as you well know, nothing is 100% on these old cars but the dirt, overspray etc. all appeared similar all around the firewall.
If it makes any difference, which I doubt, its an LM1 car too. 350/255, single exhaust, several options like am/fm flip face radio with single speaker in dash, fold down rear seat, power front disc brakes, a/c , vinyl top. Kurt, Mark and several others know my old car, current owner is looking to put in an LS1 over the winter. :)
-
Been a while since I reviewed this thread, but was contacted by a member who suggested that maybe the changeover from stamped number to foil sticker is connected with the manufacturing plant that the wiper motor assemblies came from.
I hadn't spotted this before, but the motor casings appear to have 2 different stampings after the 'DELCO PRODUCTS':
Either 'DAYTON OHIO, USA' or 'ROCHESTER, N.Y. USA'
From the limited data points in the last updated table, it's impossible to identify when the stickers were actually introduced, but it would appear that there was a transition during the model year, possibly something like this:
Stamped P/N only (early)---------Stamped P/N and Sticker (mid)------------Sticker only (late)
Wonder if wiper motor production was switched from Dayton to Rochester during production, or if both manufactured motor assemblies throughout?
-
OK.. I took a whack at changing this table to make it more clear, and added 'Dayton note' for my own..

Ahh - the dreaded fracture and loss of the hose bib and lower end of the valve body - seen many of them this way. Buy the lower piece from Impala Bob's and put 'er back together - at least he used to sell the lower half, with a new needle, to those of us with incomplete valves. Worth a shot, because finding an intact original is like buying a ton of unobtanium. Just my opinion -

Best flowing heads of the 3 years ( 302's) per a very reliable source. To the thread: if you need 68 #'s let me know, looks like a 69 post.
-
you just looking for 69's ?
Jano, it appeared that sometime during 1969, the wipers went from a 'stamped' PN, to a sticker with PN and mfg dates on it.. that was basically what we were trying to glean from the data. If you have a '68 with a stamped PN, that is as we expect, if you have a '68 with a 'stickered PN', then we'd like to see it and modify our table appropriately.
we were also confirming the two PN's (between RS and non RS wipers)...
-
stamped ,as you know ( don't have to pull the part out of storage for this one ,LOL) side note...car's never been in the rain or snow( at least since 76 ,and reported prior...it was always a toy) Honestly I don't know if the wipers work because I've never seen them operated ! It'll get a bench test before reassembly.
-

Yup, as far as I know, the 68's all used a stamped part number, 5045441 for non-RS (and I don't recall the RS version part number off the top of my head). Am not aware of a date code on them, although I have seen some ink-stamped numbers on certain motor casings; maybe the next member research effort?
-

John, looks like yours is stamped from Rochester NY, not Dayton OH; if you could confirm the assembly date code on the sticker, that'd be a solid data point, as your car is so original.

^ Thanks to Steve and Gary for updating the table - I had the same issues previously, seemed to be trial and error as it often looked different between the editing screen (aligned well) and when posted (jumbled up).......
Darrell kindly put it into a spreadsheet, but unless the spreadsheet can be posted here, we'd have to rely on him, or someone with a copy, updating it and posting a screen grab of it.
I'll look into how to create tables in HTML code.

Kurt, thank you for uploading the spreadsheet; I will do my best to update it whenever I can (subject to new data points provided by members here). I guess a screenshot would allow others to see the data easily, so I can do that too. Obviously anyone else who wants to help can do updates too.
Perhaps to refresh the original question, maybe we could try and home in on further data points in the apparent gap in the (very limited) dates so far; it looks as though the stickers were introduced between 12B and some time around 02D. Maybe it's as simple as 01A, with a sticker Julian date code of '001'.
If anyone has an original wiper motor on a car assembled between 12B and 02D, that data would be very helpful!
As for the part number that Jim posted (5045608) I am kicking myself because I saw a car for sale on eBay that had the exact same number on it's wiper motor. I was in a hurry so I added the listing to my watched items for later, but somehow seem to have deleted it....... As far as I can recall, it wasn't a Chevrolet model, but a Pontiac - although of course it may not have been OE for that make or model.
-
I'm done.

I have a question related to the wiper motors, so I guess it's OK to post here? I have a 69 Rally Sport, but the head lamp washer solenoid is missing. Shouldn't there be an electrical plug in still there somewhere to operate the solenoid? Does it come from the wiper unit, or is it a separate part of the wiring harness?

There was a special pigtail wiring from the washer terminals to the soleniod. Ricks has them repro, part #33-180005-1

The supply wires piggyback from the wiper motor terminals themselves - easy hookup -
Assembly manual is fairly vague for the CE3 installation -

Don't know if there's a newer thread than this but....My car is a Pace Car (RS) Built 03B. Wiper Motor has 5045605 stamped on front and has a silver tag 5045605 037 9 B F Rochester Plant

Older thread - have a few questions and adding my wiper motor data -
Question - For LOS cars, if the wiper motor is stamped with a PN, does that imply it did not get a sticker?
From the very limited data set, this appears to be the case. I found no evidence of sticker when I removed the wiper motor back in the day.
Data from my car:

Just discovered this older post on Wiper Motors and thought I'd add my info. Hadn't realized wiper motors were date code until just recently. I'm the 2nd owner of this '69 Z28 and bought it from my best friend's older brother in 1979. I helped him get prices on the car from several Detroit area dealers on his behalf, but he ordered from Snyder Chevrolet in Defiance, OH. It was delivered to him on 6/9/69. The car had 5,172 at the time I bought it from him and it had not been licensed since 1973. I've been very familiar with this car since before Day 1. Given all this, I'm as sure as anyone can be that this is the original wiper motor that's still on the car today.
I am not sure how this new data gets added to the wiper motor date code chart Kurt has uploaded. Perhaps someone can do that?

Is the part # stamped on the end plate and/or on the sticker? Which Delco plant (see Chuck's picture above)?
Thanks!

Norwood, O1C, RS
Stamped numbers on end of motor: 5045605, Type E, 12v
Stamped wording on side of motor: Delco Products, Rochester N.Y. USA (Couldn't get a very good picture - brake booster is in the way - but you can make out "N.Y. USA" at the end of the stamping.
