Title: Harmonic Balancer - 1969 Z/28
Post by: doomer on August 01, 2013, 10:40:28 PM
I'm having my engine rebuilt for my 69Z and need to decide on the harmonic balancer. This is not a concourse car, but I try to keep it as original as my budget allows with particular attention to appearance.

I am looking at these two.

Obviously one looks more 'original' than the other. Does this make much of a difference? One is much more expensive than the other, and I am not sure just how noticeable this will be. Thoughts?

If you want it to look original, here is a GM service replacement.....

You don't want the first one (the 6.1" one) - the 302 requires the heavy 8" balancer; the GM replacement most outfits sell will work fine, and will look pretty much original with the pulleys installed. The GM original is much more expensive, and has the face ribs that run all the way out to the edge of the hub.

Nice option, but backordered.  :(

Thanks, John and all, I'll probably go with the one from Rick's.

Why not buy an original and get it rebuilt? I do have one but I can't bring myself to sell it :(

Most people that own original 7708M balancers feel the same, that's why you rarely see them for sale.

I know this is an old thread but I recently found this NOS balancer that appears to have the right offset for My Z-28, but the spokes do not go the ring as the originals, will the work ok with my stock timing cover?

Whatever you use, make sure and use the one with the '69 timing mark proper position relative to the keyway. The '68 locates differently, but same diameter and installed height for the pulley.

Steve

Thanks Guy's! it appears to have the same offset as the one in the previous posts, how much offset is on a '69?
